My first attempt at a Phubble. Then FlickR had a hiccup last night.
I use PSP-X and found it pretty easy to do. Still trying to find a better filter for the final reflections. What do you think?

Not really a "phubble" but...

This was created using The GIMP and the method is rather different.
1. Select the area you want to include in the bubble in your photo.
2. Copy it to the clipboard (don't cut it as we will need the original photo as it was), open a new image (by default it should be the same size as the selected area) and paste the selection into it.
3. Click outside the selection to anchor it to the layer or press Ctrl+L to call up the "Layers" dialog and click on the anchor icon.
4. In the new window, do the first bit of the "Amazing Circle" – from the "Filters" menu choose "Distorts" and then "Polar Coords".
5. Make sure "To Polar" is unchecked and click OK.
6. Rotate the image 180 degrees. This appears to give better results than using "Map from Top" in the "Polar Coords" dialog or flipping the image vertically because all the bits will be on the correct sides.
7. Before you do the rest of the "Amazing Circle", from the "Layer" menu choose "Transparency" then "Fade". Click on whichever fade method you want to use. I found the one in the middle of the bottom row to be most to my liking. Click on OK.
8. Finish the "Amazing Circle" by choosing "Distorts" from the "Filters" menu and then "Polar Coords", this time making sure that "To Polar" is checked. Don't change any of the other options. Click on OK.
9. You will now have a partially transparent "Amazing Circle" sitting on a white backround. You will now use the fuzzy select tool. Make sure all the checkboxes (Antialiasing, Feather Edges, Select Transparent Areas and Sample Merged) are all unchecked. Set the Treshold to something like 40. Set the mode to "Add to the current selection" (second icon from the left).
10. Select each of the corners in turn and then press Ctrl+I to invert the mask.
11. Press Ctrl+X to remove the selection from the new image.
12. Now go back to the original image and add a new layer. Paste in the "Amazing Circle" from the other image. Move it to wherever you want it and then anchor it to the new layer.
13. In the Layers dialog, experiment with the opacity mode and settings. Modes which I have found give good results include Normal, Grain Extract, Grain Merge, Value, Hard Light, Lighten Only... Well you get the idea. Different opacity modes suit different photos. You will need to play around with the opacity level as well but that just adds to the fun!

@ krandolph:
With all due respect, this thread is specifically for "phubbles" created only with Kamome's AC process and standard PS/image editor tools for touch-up processing.
While certainly exquisite, creations using Flaming Pear's Flexify or similar specialized software/add-ins should be in a separate thread for the benefit of those with access to the resources required.
Thanks for understanding,
George

Kamome's AC process is how we made these circles in the beginning.

gimp is a photo processing program that is distributed free. I don't use it since I have photoshop but here is where you can download it if you want

It has been pointed out to me that not all GIMP users will have the Transparency>Fade plug-in. If you can't find that option in the Layer menu in your copy of The GIMP, don't worry. Help is at hand! Here is what you do instead of step 7 in my instructions.
With your half-made, rotated AC you click on Layer > Mask > Add Layer Mask. If this is greyed out, click on Layer > Duplicate Layer, then Ctrl+L to call up the Layers dialog, select the Background, which will be the bottom layer, and delete it. You should then be able to add a layer mask to your copy of the original background. You want to choose the White (Full Opacity) option.
Make sure the foreground colour is black. Click on the "Gradient" tool and choose the gradient "FG to transparent".
Now drag vertically upwards from the bottom of the image to which you have just added the layer mask and let go of the mouse button when you get to the top. This will produce an image which fades to transparent from top to bottom (because you are fading black to transparent from bottom to top in the mask, you aren't affecting the image yet, and black will become transparent). That last bit might not make sense but don't worry about it! Go back into the Layer menu, choose Mask and then choose "Apply Layer Mask"
You have now done manually what the Layer > Transparency > Fade command does if you have the plug-in. I had forgotten all about it because the plug-in was quicker to use (just!).
Now carry on with the rest of the instructions.
If you can't find things in the Layer menu, press Ctrl+L to call up the Layers dialog, select the layer you want to work on and then right click to get a menu which contains bits from the Image and Layers menus (and possibly some others).
