About Alpine Images Australia

For all your favourite photos of Australian sub-alpine and alpine nature. Loose definition of sub-alpine is 1000-1800 m (still in the tree line), with alpine being above the treeline, but the group is really about sub-alpine/alpine regions rather than exact ecosystem areas.

Stretching from Canberra through the Brindabella Range to the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales and along the Great Divide through eastern Victoria and through Tasmanian high country, Australia's alpine and subalpine environments are unique and special.

There are eleven national parks and reserves in the Australian Alps on the Australian mainland that cross State and Territory borders. These parks and reserves are collectively known as the Australian Alps national parks and include the highest mountain ranges of mainland Australia - containing the Australian mainland's only peaks exceeding 2,000 metres (6,500 feet). The Alps are important for conservation, recreation and as a water catchment, with much of the eastern slopes' runoff diverted into the Murray River and its tributary the Murrumbidgee River through the Snowy Mountains Scheme.

Tasmania is the most mountainous of Australian states (an island south of the Australian mainland). Nature conservation (mostly national parks) and areas of minimal use (largely remnant native cover) are major land uses in Tasmania representing nearly 42 percent (or 2.8 million hectares) of the State collectively. These land uses are concentrated in rugged western region and the spectacular mountainous region in the north-east of the state extending through the centre.
