About ALGHERO - A Catalan city in Sardegna

The Catalan city in Sardegna
An isle in island
Alghero was founded by the Genoese inhabitants in the 11th century and remained under the Doria dynasty for a long time which was interrupted only by a short period dominated by the Pisano family (1283-1284).
Dorias, a powerful family from Genoa, fortified a fishing village, turning it into an important fortress. The Dorias built the fortress, because of Alghero's strategic position in the centre of the Western Mediterranean.
The name of Alghero comes from the large quantity of sea weed ("alghe" in Italian ) deposited on the shore by the sea. Alghero was originally called "Aleguerium", from which the name Alghero derives.
In 1354, Alghero was conquered by the Catalans and Aragonese, after the Genoese lost the naval battle of Porto Conte. After the conquest of Peter IV of Arborea, the first thing the Catalan Government did was expel the Sardinian and Genoese population from the city.
Alghero began to develop and became a Catalan colony.
Alghero was a Spanish city for approx. 4 centuries, playing, during that period, a strategic role. In 1501 Alghero was declared one of the "Fedelissime" (trusted cities) and in 1541, the king of Spain, Carlo V, visited the city.
The Aragonese domination first and, later, the Spanish one lasted until 1720, but in the 16th century the town was fortified because of its important strategic position in the west Mediterranean Sea.
In 1720 the Savoy government started and trade had a new development, especially the activity of the coral fishing.
In 1862 the inhabitants of Alghero built the first bathing establishment that, from then on, became a characteristic of the town’s touristic activity which is still active today.
