12 Aug 08 - As famous as 'The Rock' is to people around the world, visitors are always surprised to see such lush vegetation growing on what they imagined was a desolate island! From the time when the island was a military post, through all the years as a prison, some residents of the island (those stationed, employed, or imprisoned) always tended gardens for food, distraction, enjoyment, edification, rehabilitation, etc. Plants which were well suited to this relatively harsh locale are still thriving!

About The Gardens of AlcatrazThis photo pool is intended to feature all the interesting garden plants that naturalized on 'the rock', as well as the Garden Conservancy's efforts to restore some of the old, historic prison garden from which they 'escaped'. |
