Howdy all,
Anybody out there also a trained, qualified and professional nature and culture travel / tour guide in South Africa?
I've been one for the last 4 - 5 years and although the finances are not nearly the same, I honestly can't say that I'm missing the 8-5 office job. My office is the bush, the ceiling the African skies and my office furniture is an open safari vehicle, what more can you want?
The walls in my office changes with the seasons and the ceiling are permanently re-painted on an daily, sometimes even hourly basis and I get to meet people from all over the world.
If I say more you guys will most probably hate me.
I'm presently trying to write a book about my experiences and hopefully a publisher will be interested enough to sign me up - I'll keep you posted.
In the mean time, I have a couple of photos here and would love to hear comments on them to determine whether anybody out here think it's worthwhile for me to continue shooting.

I have visited Africa 5 times. Each time I leave a little more of my heart there.
Now I am back in rural West Sussex, England, which although beautiful is not Africa!
I love the wild open spaces of Africa. I went to Mpumulanga (RSA) 17 months ago and stayed at a little town called Sabie. Gorgeous! What lovely people. See pictures of pesias of that town on my site.

I'm Karen - a journalist/writer, based in Durban, South Africa. I'm an info-junkie and although I love home and wouldn't want to live anywhere else, I'm very happy with my laptop and camera in a backpack heading into the unknown.
You can read some of my travel stories at:
africatravel.suite101.com/
Durban is a great city - it is hardly ever cold, the sun almost always shines and the city has so many colors - the sky; the ocean, the flowering trees, the palm trees; the clothing of the multi-cultural community.
I've got some pics on flickr, but get caught up and forget to upload them all.

Hi there - I'm from Ireland (Belfast), now based in England (Buckinghamshire). I'm a broadcast journalist. Most recently I've been working in Durban & Umlazi in KwaZulu Natal, South Africa - covering 2010 World Cup preparations, grassroots football, HIV/Aids & life in general. Previously done some work in Zimbabwe & Egypt.
Most beautiful place: northern Drakensberg near the KZN border with the Free State.
Other fascinating or friendly places - Cape Town, Morocco, Lesotho & Botswana.
News I like to hear: Victories for Highlanders FC (Bulawayo) & Durban Pioneers (Umlazi).
Also interested in contacting refugees from Zimbabwe or those involved with them.

Hi, I'm Richard, I live presently in Strasbourg, France, but I previous ly travelled and lived in Africa, starting from Ethiopia in the early eighties and finishing (for now at least) in Central African Republic (2002 - 2005). I also spent time in Zimbabwe, and travelled extensively west, south and east of the continent. I enjoyed every trip, every opportunity, loved all the places although I found myself at times in troubled spots (quite easy in Africa unfortunately). I loved meeting people, making friends, and had also tremendous times in the bush (gorillas, rhinos, climbing Mt Kilimanjaro, sightseeing Vic falls, the Blue Nile and Lakes north to south of the Great Rift valley). I just hope to return and spend at least a day again in many of these places. Voilà!! I enjoy sharing pictures as you all and will be happy to keep in touch,
cheers to all

Hello to all in this group.
It is clear that you have been touched by the beautiful folks who live on the great African Continent which often contrasts with surviving frequently.
I lived in the high grass lands of the NW province off of “the ring road” in Cameroon with Fulani people & on the beach in Monrovia, Liberia with Fanti fishermen transplanted there from Ghana for 2 years in the mid 70’s during peaceful times.
Originally from W.Va., USA. My loves aside from my wife and 2 children are Astronomy, photography & travels.
Most of my travels have been in Africa & North America with side trips to the Caribbean, Europe, and the pacific. Returning from Africa & Europe, my wife and I rode across Canada by motorcycle & ran out of money in Oregon. Fell in love with the Pacific NW and have made it our home since 1976.
My heart is broken over what the blood diamond trade has done to West Africa and the people who live there. If you wish to see images of happier people & times in Liberia (pre war) be sure to check out the African images I recently uploaded. They are dear to me, I hope you enjoy them. Thank you.

At first I had a practical time in one hospital, but now I'm going to visit my Cameroonian friends and we are planning projects together.
To have friends in Cameroon, whos way of thinking and living is very different from ours, can open the eyes and I'm really looking forward to meet all again - and to bring new photos ;-)

Eugenia, from the central California coast, USA.
I went on a short trip with a friend to Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar through Exodus (a British tour group). I feel strange mentioning this, but I was very depressed by my trip. I loved Africa (particularly Kenya) and her people, but I did not seem to get to know them or really be in the place the way I had envisioned. One man on the tour went so far as to say that he thought AIDS was the best thing that ever happened to Africa. I was more than a bit shocked. Several of the Brits really seemed to have a Colonial attitude that I was unused to. I had also served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ukraine, so was used to really living in a place and not just tavelling like a tourist on holiday. The next time I go back to Africa (or anywhere else in the "3rd" world) I plan to do it differently.
Sorry if I've offended anyone, but that was my true experience, and it does not mean to reflect on the British as a group or Exodus as a tour group. Peace.

Hi
I am Candy from Cape Town.
Photography is my passion. This year I travelled from the west to the east coast of Africa following the light.
I sailed between the islands of the lamu archipelago snapping up the sun. The people were great subjects - so natural and the islands unspoilt by tourists.
I photographed teeming game at various waterholes in Etosha Pan. I loved the interplay between the movement of the animals, the water and the light.
I would love to share my images with you and hope you like them as much as I enjoyed taking them

Hi all
I'm Derick, a cultural anthropologist at Union College in the USA. I lived with a Xhosa family in the rural Transkei for most of 1998-99 (I was also affiliated with Rhodes and spent a few months of this period in Grahamstown), and have also visited S Africa in 1996, 2003 and 2005. For about 4 months in 1993-94 I travelled (via public transport) in Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe -- if I ever get my binders full of slides scanned, I'll post some pictures from that trip.

Hi, everybody.
I'm Nicole from Washington, D.C. in the USA. After a lifetime of dreaming about it, I was sent by my Bible church to Kenya last year for a medical mission trip. We worked in Kibera, Githurai, and Eburru treating malaria and other concerns. The safari at the end of the trip was amazing, of course, but I have to say the most memorable thing about the trip was the "attitude of gratitude" held by the Africans. I've spent time on four continents, but I would suggest that they are among the most thankful and warm people I have come across. It was humbling and inspiring to spend time with them. Feel free to check out my Kenya pool. :)
Blessings on ya!

I was planning to get down to Nigeria during the summer but I never made it passed Morocco. Great people and plenty to see and photograph there. Why Nigeria? Well I was born there for one and, travel-wise, it's no Switzerland. That appeals to the writer in me, which is the profession I've pursued, in various iterations, for the past twenty years. I'm Canadian, and American, grew up in Jamaica and spent several years in the Far East. I plan to visit as much of Africa as I possibly can.

Mambo vipi wote.
East Africa (esp Tanzania) was where I wanted to go since I's a kid. Got there in 1996 and stayed 8.5yrs. 3yrs working as Agricultural development advisor 200km SW of Arusha (no phone or power back then - it was great), 2 crazy yrs running a business in Arusha with a local friend, 3.5yrs managing a 1000ha export cropping farm at West Kilimanjaro. Loved all of it esp the 6.5yrs out of town. Great trailriding/4WDing - during 97/98 el Nino was mad! Don't miss the corruption but miss the 'make it up as you go' feel and the everyday seeing sights/hearing stories that shake your ribs to laughing, grit your teeth in anger/frustration or cloud your eyes with sadness.
Was back for a 3wk visit in Mar 2006, and then 4wks in Uganda early 2007 checking out work opportunity. Currently planning to get back there for that...
If you can get to Africa...then get there. Haya basi, nakutakia nyini wote safari njema!

i've been two times in africa, once in malawi where i shooted a video documentary about theater and hiv with the italian antropological theater group "ygramul lemillemolte". the second time i went in burkina to shoot a video documentary, a photo-project and a music research.....(a diary of two months there going around..) starting from the experience of the manifestation from the 20 years of the death of Thomas Sankara..
Still looking for a production and distribution of this last project..you can see the picture of burkina on my page..would like to have some feedback!
in this moment i'm working on the music research with a belgian composer who was in burkina with me and the music takes inspiration and energy from the picture i shooted...so, every feedback can only help us!!!
