About Birds of Africa
Although I've never been to Africa myself, I do have a Birds of Africa South of the Sahara field guide (published by Struik). I must say, there's lots of beautiful but strangely named birds there (compared to the birds we have here in the US).
This group is dedicated to any and all wild birds that can be found in Africa. To help get the group going, you may post photos of birds that are from Africa, but have been seen or have established colonies, elsewhere. EG. Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) in the Unites States is acceptable. However, I must emphasize that no location giveaways (only for pictures taken outside of Africa) should be visible in the pictures. (For example, no number plates, license plates, street signs, road signs, or anything that tells you that the photo was definitely taken outside of Africa). We want these pictures to look as wild as possible.
Like my other groups, I'd post a search section below, but with the diversity of species, I'm afraid I will only be able to do a genus search. At least you'll still be able to search. This search will be different. the Type of bird will begin each section, then within each section will be the list of Genus links for each type of bird.
RULES:
1. Tag your photos with the genus name (if known).
2. In the description, list the common and full scientific name, and the local name is optional. Also optional, you can also geotag the photo and list the location as well.
3. WILD BIRDS only please. No zoo birds (This is viewed as "cheating", lol!), captive or pet birds. All birds must be wild. If you saw an African bird in the US, for example, you may post it if it was say, a Cattle Egret or possibly a Helmeted Guineafowl, but the guineafowl is a borderline captive-wildbird in some areas of the US. They are bred in captivity then released for game hunting. Some of these gamebirds survive the onslaught of lead bullets and mate, and established "wild" populations sprout up.
Other than that, post away!
Enjoy the diverse wildlife that is Africa!
