Stern gland

I need some advice on servicing the stern gland on Boomerang.
I've no experience of these at all so expect stupid questions!

The gland was spraying water, not dripping, towards the end of the season. I take it I should replace the packing.

I assume the black rubber pipe should be replaced and be held in place with 4 jubilee clips, not 2.

Where do I start?

"Insufficient data" as my computer says! Could you give a more detailed description or squeeze your mobile in and take a photo? Mine doesn't have any packing or grease but does have a rubber tube (it's a Tidesmarine) so the variety is enormous........

Paul, I replaced the deep sea seal on Super Snoopy last year as it also started spraying water all over the place. I tried in vain to get an alternative system (PSS, Volvo. Tidesmarine) but the Deep Sea Seal was the the only one that fitted in the space available - it was by far the most expensive too. You seem to have more space between the gearbox flange and the pipe that comes out of the hull. Have uploaded a couple of snaps for comparison purposes.

Paul, here is a link to a picture tutorial of the job you are looking at which should give you an idea of what you are up against. www.pbase.com/mainecruising/pss_shaft_seal
Go to the “How to” Articles link at the top of the page for lots more useful stuff.
Hope that helps, Duncan.
