In 1986 I was filmed windsurfing on the sea at West Kirby on the Wirral, slow news day so a camera crew came to film the bad gales to show that someone liked the weather, I kept looking straight at them every time I came in to the beach to gybe to try and work our what they were doing on the beach with some big lump covered in a cover. Made a big feature of this on Look North that night and as I was supposed to be at a clients site working all day questions were asked!

Here's our forecast for tonight.

Wind West or southwest, 6 to gale 8, increasing severe gale 9 to violent storm 11 for a time.

Have been down to the marina, put out extra fenders and ropes just to be on the safe side.

Just back from windsurfing and it's gusting 40mph already on the north coast. Was very glad I wasn't in the Achilles!

I was reading the manual for a nice chart plotter for windows and found it could display GRIB weather information on the charts, it recommended as one nice free program for downloading and viewing these files. I did this and find it produces a picture and animation very similar to the link at the start of this topic. The interesting aspect is that it will give you a prediction at any spot you place the mouse, same for openCPN once you have loaded the appropriate file.
These are purely computer generated files without human intervention but very good for forecasting what may be in store for the next few days.

Anything must be better than the forecast the met office give these days, full of generalisations and they still get it wrong!
