Blue's History

I received an email the other day on Scuttlebutt, the Yachting Monthly Forum.

The email was from a previous owner of Blue, who had seen her on her mooring.

It turns out that Blue is well travelled!

She was originally in Poole, and then moved to Uphill, near Weston Super Mare on the Bristol Channel, where Colin, my correspondent, bought her in 1985. He soon moved her to Milford Haven, where he kept her at Rudders Boatyard.

From there he sailed her to Ireland a couple of times before moving her to Cornwall, sailing her round via Lands End, Mousehole, and Newlyn to a mooring at Restronguet, which is about mile from where she now lives.

He sold her in 1998 to the people we bought her from in 2003.

He described her as "a fantastic and much loved boat, really seaworthy and as capable as something a lot bit bigger."

He said there were some issues with the rudder and skeg which I should be aware of; these have been fixed, and no longer appear to be issues, but I will put his comments on a separate topic because they may affect other boats.

It was good to hear of Blue's past, and as Colin lives only about 15 miles from us, we will hopefully get together for a beer sometime.
Red Marlin 8 years ago
Great to hear of individual boats history. I was lucky with Red Marlin as I bought her in Swansea in 1990 and before the sale had it surveyed by Chris Butler who new its history very well. It was built in 1978 for Martyn Riley a sailing instructor from North Wales who sailed it with his partner Linda across the Atlantic. He returned to Swansea in 1983 and sold the boat back to Chris Butler who smartened it up and put it in the 1984 London Boat Show as he did not have a new boat available. (Probably too busy doing his solo transat in which he won his class). Previously the boat had dragged its anchor in Barbados and lost the rudder on a reef. The insurance decided the best way to repair it was for Chris to take a new rudder as luggage and fit it in Barbados. The boat stayed in Swansea having a couple of more owners (surveyed each time by Chris) until Jan and I bought her. We mostly sailed her round Scotland. 3 times when I had to work in London lived on board. We retired 11 years ago and sailed down to the Med (twice). Much loved by all the family (no part of the family)
