About Casual and Accidental Birds

PLEASE READ THE RULES BEFORE YOU POST! THANKS!!

This group is dedicated to documenting occurences of casual and accidental bird sightings worldwide. Casual species are those that are sighted in a given area (county, state, province, etc.) about every two to four years. Accidental species are those that are sighted about every five years or less.

It's impractical to impose geographic limitations on what qualifies as casual and accidental on a worldwide basis, so use your best judgment. For example, a Long-billed Curlew found in southwestern North Dakota is a regular occurence, but one found on the eastern side of the state is a casual occurence.

RULES:

When posting photos, please include the following:

1. Species common name (in photo title AND as a tag).
2. Scientific name (in photo title or caption AND as a tag).
3. Please add the tag "accidental bird" to the photo.
4. Date photo was taken (in photo caption or included in the visisble EXIF data).
5. Location photo was taken (in photo caption). Be as precise as possible. As this is a worldwide group, be sure to include the country.
6. A brief explanation as to why the species is casual or accidental for the location (in photo caption).

Please have the bird identified to species before you post! There is no limit as to how many photos you can post, but please don't go overboard on redundancy (i.e. one to three photos of a particular individual from the same location on the same date is enough). Pick the one photo you feel best identifies the bird, and if you have another favorite photo or two of that individual, or photos that show field marks not visible in just one photo, include them as well. I've started things off with a few photos from North Dakota and Minnesota, USA.

This should be sufficient to get the group started. Currently there is no level of taxonomic organization, but that will change as the group grows. If anyone is interested in helping administer this group, please contact me.

Bring on the birds!
