About Abstract Impressions
Abstract Impressions
Please post artistic images that contain an abstract element--images that create an impression, a tone, a mood. Abstract Impressions is very loosely modeled on, but not limited to, Abstract Impressionism*.
Abstract elements may be mixed with realistic, representational elements, but it is not required. Images may also be entirely recognizable but seen in a new way. Example: cracks in sidewalk, shadows on building exteriors, composition of background elements as subject vs. object as subject, etc.
Suitable images may include: DOF blur, reflection, images shot through glass, multiple exposures, use of negative space, unique POV, etc. Many images will fall somewhere between abstract and impressionistic.
Photographs or scans of your artwork are also warmly invited. Please fill the frame with your artwork.

*Abstract Impressionism.
A term coined by Elaine de Kooning to describe paintings that resemble certain late Impressionist pictures (notably those of Monet) in their brushwork but have no representative content: ‘Retaining the quiet uniform pattern of strokes that spread over the canvas without climax or emphasis, these followers keep the Impressionist manner of looking at a scene but leave out the scene.’ In 1958 Lawrence Alloway used the term as the title of an exhibition he organized in London; the artists represented included Sam Francis, Patrick Heron, and Nicolas de Staël. The term has also been applied to various French abstract painters of the same period, for example Manessier.
