About Abbeydale Picture House

In 1920 the Abbeydale Picture House opened it's doors and become the largest and most luxurious cinema in Sheffield. In one building you could have a dance, a meal and see a movie and/or a show. In 1975 the building showed it's last movie. It then became a furniture warehouse but that also closed eventually. There were ideas of knocking it down and building flats, turning it into a church or a mosque.

In 2003 the building was saved and the Friends of the Abbeydale Picture House was started ensuring the building would be restored and saved for the nation. Now the building is once again used for theatre and the occasional movie but it needs a lot of money to restore it and to reclaim it's place as a top venue in Sheffield.
