About Abbé Fouré

Sculpted rocks
Abbé Fouré (1839-1910), having suffered a stroke at the age of 30, which left him paralyzed on one side, retreated to a life as a hermit in the cliffs of Rothéneuf. He carved over 300 fascinating, grotesque and bizarre faces und figures into the rock.

Rochers sculptés
Les rochers sculptés de Rothéneuf sont un des environnements spontanés parmi les plus connus de l'art brut. Ils ont été réalisés de 1894 à 1910 par l’abbé Adolphe Julien Fouéré, dit l'abbé Fouré (né en 1839 à Saint-Thual (Ille-et-Vilaine) et décédé en 1910 à Rothéneuf), comme il signait lui-même sur les cartes postales qu'il dédicaçait à ses visiteurs.
