About ARKive - images of life on EarthThis group has been started to enable you to submit your images to ARKive – www.arkive.org. "A vast treasury of wildlife images has been steadily accumulating over the past century, yet no one has known its full extent - or indeed its gaps - and no one has had a comprehensive way of gaining access to it. ARKive will put that right, and it will be an invaluable tool for all concerned with the well-being of the natural world." ARKive is a Wildscreen initiative Wildscreen is a not-for-profit charity working to promote public appreciation of the world’s biodiversity and the need for its conservation, using the power of wildlife imagery. Wildscreen is uniquely positioned at the heart of the international wildlife and environmental media industry, and for over 25 years has been celebrating, applauding, gathering, protecting and sharing images of species and wild places to achieve its mission. How can I get my images in ARKive (www.arkive.org)? ARKive is looking for video clips and images of the world’s threatened species, especially those depicting aspects of a species’ life history - from egg to adult, behaviours such as hunting and feeding, typical habitat, threats and conservation action. Images shared in this Flickr group will be displayed on the ARKive website if they have been tagged with relevant species binomial tags and machine tags, small thumbnails will link back to the members Flickr pages. In addition, ARKive Flickr group photos will be regularly reviewed by the ARKive Media Research Team, who will select images to be included in the main ARKive website at www.arkive.org. If your images are chosen, a member of the ARKive Media Research Team will contact you via your Flickr account. You will increase the chance of your images being selected from this Flickr group for inclusion in ARKive (www.arkive.org), if… …the species is already on ARKive: • Your image is of a species that we currently do not have many images of. • Your picture shows a life stage, behaviour, habitat or other aspect of the species biology which is not currently represented on its ARKive profile. …the species is not on ARKive: • Your image is of a species on ARKive’s most wanted list, which is updated regularly by the ARKive Media Research Team. • Your image is of a species that is listed on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, and is not currently represented on ARKive. • Your image is of a species listed on Appendix I or II of CITES, and is not currently represented on ARKive. • Your image is of a species that is listed on the US Fish & Wildlife Service Endangered Species Programme (USFWS) and is not currently represented on ARKive. • Your image is of a species that is rare, endemic or threatened within a given geographic range. How to catalogue your images for the ARKive Flickr group: 1. Please set your images as public. 2. Your images can be licensed under any of the existing Flickr licence models, but by submitting to the ARKive Flickr group you grant permission for your images to be used by ARKive - please read the group rules for more information. 3. Please tag your images as descriptively as possible. Include common name and scientific name, if known, location, and state whether the image shows the species in the wild or in captivity. 4. Please also use one or more machine tags, if possible: Common name, e.g. taxonomy:common="Polar bear" Species scientific name, e.g. taxonomy:binomial="Ursus maritimus" IUCN Red List category, e.g. status:IUCN=Vulnerable or status:IUCN=VU CITES Appendix, e.g. status:CITES="Appendix I" US Fish and Wildlife Service status, e.g. status:USFWS="Listed threatened" or status:USFWS=LT Location of the subject, e.g. geo:lat=51.4525, geo:lon=-2.5936 or place your photo on the Flickr map A machine tag is added in exactly the same way as a normal tag - click on "Add a tag" next to your photo and type your machine tag into the box. See the full machine tag list at the bottom of this page or here. If you have any suggestions regarding the list, please contribute to the machine tag discussion thread.
