About Cameras 4 Children

Cameras for Children

In the summer of 2009, Tyler Cacek is traveling to Uganda as a volunteer photographer for the HALO foundation (http://www.haloworldwide.org/). HALO uses the arts to help afflicted children express themselves in third world countries. For the rehabilitation of former child soldiers, expression through art has proven to be one of the most effective forms of therapy, and allows the normally voiceless to express their value in a world that so often leaves them overlooked.

Not only will Tyler be a volunteer photographer for two months, he will be teaching the art of photography to needy children, and will be helping former commercial sex workers, child soldiers, and rape victims therapeutically express themselves through the means of photography.

In order to make this happen, Tyler needs $5,000 to pay for cameras, batteries, film, developing supplies, and general travel expenses, all of which will be going directly to helping Ugandan children emotionally heal from traumatic pasts.

To reach this goal, Tyler is selling blank greeting cards with photographs from his personal collection on the covers. The inside of the cards will include a description of the project and where the money from this card is going. Individual cards cost $5.00. For every card purchased, one more child will have the freedom of showing the world what they see through their photographs.

In addition to selling cards, Tyler is also selling prints of his photographs. All photographs found at www.tylercacek.com and www.flickr.com/photos/tylercacek are for sale. Individual prints cost $45 for 8’x10’s and $60 for 11’x14’s. framed prints are sold for $60 for each 8’x10’ and $90 for each 11x14. If you would like to purchase multiple prints, Tyler would be more than happy to personally work pricing out.

Early 2009, Tyler will hold a photography Exhibition and Auction at a local gallery, as time gets closer, details will be announced.

Q&A

Q: I see a picture on your website that I really want on a card. Can you make a card for me with that photo on it?
A: absolutely, custom card orders are $8 each, and usually take a couple of days to get to you.

Q: how is giving a child a camera going to give them a better life?
A: any form of art can allow for children to express themselves in a way that words alone cannot. Children that have gone through the traumas of war, genocide, slavery, and exploitation need a medium that grants them a personal voice. I am here to help them express themselves through that medium.

Q: Is it really going to cost you $5,000?
A: yes. Kampala, Uganda is home to between 1.5 and 2 million people, nearly half of which are under 16. In a two month period, there are going to many opportunities to put cameras in the hands of suppressed voices. Cameras, batteries, film, and printing are not cheap, and when the cost of personal airfare is added, the expense totals well over $5,000

Q: I have an old camera that I would like to donate. Will you take it over and give it to a child? Will you take donated disposable cameras?

A: yes, I need any type of automatic, manual, film, or digital camera that run off of batteries that can still be purchased at most U.S. stores. I estimate that I will take about 50 cameras and 400 rolls of film. I will also take donations of disposable cameras, rolls of 35mm and 120mm film, and bulk film.

In addition, a donation of a small 35mm film scanner would be greatly appreciated, as it would greatly reduce developing costs abroad.
we are also in desperate need of camera donations, of whatever amount, film, or digital. we are also in need of film.
