About Flickr Botanical Garden

About Wildflower Field Guide, North America

A group to create an online field guide of both cultivated and wild flowers, berries, fruit, nuts, seeds, and leaves from all over the world. Flickr Botanical Garden is a companion group to Wildflower Field Guide, North America, and credit goes to them for most of the text and resources on this page. If your photos meet their requirements, please post them there too!

Please note: There are a lot of rules to this group, so please consider carefully whether you want to contribute. We will remove non-compliant photos because we have a specific mission, not because we don't like your photo (and not just to be mean).

If you don't have enough information to fill out every tag, that's okay! Use your judgment and post as much information as you can about the flower or plant.

Each flower posted should have the following tags, if possible:
___*fbg – this is a literal to signify the group.
___* Common Name – Of course each species has many local and common names. Please include at least the one you know it by.
___* flower color(s) – Primary color and any variations from this list: purple, blue, green, yellow, orange, brown, red, pink or white. When questionable or in doubt, add all applicable colors.
___* Country- Where the plant was located, such as "USA" or "China." Be sure to put multiple word places in quotes. The more detailed locations you can give, the better. It helps to list a region as well, for those who might be looknig for plants from Appalachia or the Southwest.
___* Wild or Cultivated – cultivated examples of wild plants, such as those in botanical gardens, can be labeled with both wild and cultivated tags.
___* Continent – Continent where the plant was found.

Optional tags:
___* Binomial Name - Genus species
___* Genus Name separately.
___* flower shape(s) – Primary shape of the flower from the following list: 2petals, 3petals, 4petals, 5petals, 6petals, manypetals, longcluster, roundcluster or oddshaped
___* Family Name - the taxonomic family (usually ending in "aceae.")

Please see zen's wonderful diagram here for a guide to petals and shapes.

Please do not post a photo to the group pool and then ask that it be identified. This isn't an identification group. For help identifying plants/flowers try Wildflowers, or the flickr group ID Please. If you've already got a name and want to verify, try USDA Plants database.

The best photos to post are those that really show the characteristics of a plant. Macro and artistic shots, while beautiful, may not be the best to include here. Choose photos that you would use to help identify a plant or its parts.

This group encourages posting a large number of photos of different species at one time (as long as they meet the tagging criteria) - there are no posting limits here! Please be sure to keep your photos on topic, however. Just pick your best ones to share and post away!
