About Sorby Fungus Group
This is a site where members of Sheffield Sorby NHS Fungus Group can show photos of fungi to each other, make comments and help in identification. Non-members' photos of interesting fungi taken in the Sorby NHS study area - Sheffield and the surrounding region, including South Yorkshire, North Derbyshire, the Peak District, the Dukeries and Sherwood- are also invited. www.sorby.org.uk/area.shtml
The Sorby Natural History Society www.sorby.org.uk.html covers a full range of natural history interests in Sheffield and the surrounding area, providing for both interested beginners and specialists. Sorby Fungus Group was revitalised in July 2005. Previously it had existed as an ad hoc group of enthusiasts. The Group now provides a forum for people with an interest in fungi to meet and share their knowledge and information. It caters for all levels of expertise and encourages novices to improve their skills.
Regular fungus forays, field meetings and workshops are held throughout the year, in which members get together to observe and record fungi in well known localities or to explore new areas. One or two indoor meetings each year enable members to show slides and exhibit specimens. A basic programme of events for those interested in natural history, including the fungal events, is posted on the Sorby website, where details of how to join the club are also given. Full meet-up details are given in the monthly newsletter posted to members.
The Group’s Recorder maintains records of fungi in the Sorby area of interest. The Group’s current database holds around 24,500 records and is growing rapidly. People are urged to send their records and observations of fungi to fungirecords@sorby.org.uk .
If you are interested in fungi and live in or visit the Sorby region please contact us. We are always pleased to see new faces.
