About From Wilmore Park, St Louis, Mo
As a child, I spent many summer days exploring, climbing, hiking, biking, and fishing here. I recall one lake had huge reddish-orange fish we could never catch (probably carp or someone’s discarded koi?). From the other lake, in spring, we harvested baby catfish to put in a fish tank. Don’t recall exactly how that ended up, but it couldn’t have gone too well for the fish.
Being at this park led to other adventures as well. Since much of this park runs along River DesPeres (an open air storm drainage system), my friend, Bob, and I hopped the fence and explored a huge runoff tunnel that empties into the River. It was cold, smelly, and a bit creepy down there (perfect environment for a couple of adolescent adventurers with flashlights). Fortunately for us, it didn’t rain when we were down there, or we would have,, well,, drowned. (Kids don’t always think so far ahead) At one point, we climbed these embedded rungs to see if we could push up a manhole cover (wanting to see how far we had ventured, I suppose). It wouldn’t budge and just after we gave up and withdrew our fingers from the holes there was a solid “thunk, thunk” of tires slapping across the cover. Recognizing the closeness of this call we didn’t repeat the experiment and,,, (it’s a good thing the cover didn’t move? ).
