About Palio of Asti

Third Sunday of September.
The Palio which had its revivale in 1967 after a long interruption, began in 1200 as an occasion of celebrating the freedom of the town and as a feast of its people.
The traditional ceremonies of the "Palio" start in May, on the occasion of the festivities of the Patron Saint "San Secondo" with the appraisement of the "Palio" and its offering on the part of the Town Council to the Collegiate Churc of San Secondo, as a historical commemoration of the recounciliation between civil and religious authorities after a long dispute, settled by the offering of a crimson banner to the Patron Saint's Church.
On the day of the "Palio" the procession, led by the Captain of the "Palio" starting from the square of the ancient gothic Cathedral, passes through the streets of the historic centre, to end at Alfieri Square, where the race begins.
About a thousand of partecipants dressed up in their rich fourteenth and fifteenth century costumes, wearing the colours of the "rioni" and of the communes in the province, take part in the procession and compete in the exciting horse race for the conquest of the "Palio"
