About Essence of Maine

Maine is one of the most unique states here in the United States. This group is designed to show out-of-staters what this great state has to offer so please, only post photos that have been taken in Maine that illustrate what a visitor might encounter. Here are some facts to think about: Enjoy!

1. West Quoddy Lighthouse in Lubec, ME is the first place to see the sun rise in the contingent states (Guam is really the first U.S. place to see the sun rise thanks to Mark E Mark).

2. Maine is the only U.S. state with one syllable.

3. Maine is the only state that shares its border with just one state.

4. Aroostook County, our biggest county, is bigger than both Connecticut and Rhode Island combined!

5. Maine produces 99% of all the blueberries in the country making it the single largest producer of blueberries in the United States.

6. 90% of the country's toothpick supply is produced in Maine. (Wow, I'm proud of that one!)

7. With a total area of 33,215 square miles the state covers nearly as many square miles as the other five New England states combined.

8. With a population of 1,274,923, the entire state of Maine is less populated than greater Boston.

9. Along with Vermont, Hawaii and Alaska, Maine is under the Highway Beautification Act which disallows any billboards on any of the highways in the state of Maine.
