The "Show Us What You Got" Starfighter Contest

view profile

peterlmorris is a group administrator peterlmorris  Pro User  says:

Greetings, Starfighters.

I know we just got done building tiny starfighters for the SCI-LUG contest, but I'm hoping you'll have some creative energy left for this contest.

The Challenge:

Build an original starfighter, and make it awesome.

The Rules:

1) It must be new for the contest (do not enter old MOCs).
2) It must be original - DO NOT build something that is from an existing universe (Star Wars, Battlestar Galactica, Macross, etc). However, your entry may be inspired by fighters from an existing universe, or be in the style of an existing universe.
3) You may use Lego and clones, as well as tape, stickers, Brickarms, painted parts, modified parts, etc. It should be mostly building bricks, though. While they are cool, I'm not looking for kit-bashed specials (never mind the limited time frame).
4) You must submit ONE (1) picture to the pool, and TWO (2) pictures from different angles to this thread.
5) Contest will end midnight, EDT, March 31st, 2009. Judging will begin shortly after that.
6) One entry per person, so throw your all into it. No need to rush, either, as we've got a bit of time.

Prizes:
1st Place: An Archangel starfighter, as seen here and here.

2nd Place: An Einshrike starfighter, as seen here and here.

3rd Place: A Starskipper trainer starfighter, as seen here and here.

4th Place: A selection of 60-70 parts that I consider to be spacy, and that show up in many of my starfighter builds.

See the contest prizes in the brick here.

Judges:

Me (Peter Morris)
Nnenn
Dan R (aka Inquisitor General, aka Happy Weasel, aka The Tan Bandit)
Fedde Barendrecht (aka Karf Oolhu)

NOTE: Thanks to those who offered their time as judges. I appreciate your willingness to serve.

To post a pic to the thread, put the url of your pictures in square brackets, like this:

Great contest idea, it'll be nice to stretch a bit. I just want to point out that you don't explicitly limit each entrant to one entry in the rules, although it is implied with the singular tense.

Just thought you'd like to nip that one in the afterburner.

bionicbadboi says:

I was wondering what size you consider a Starfighter to be, compared to naval combat craft? What I associate with starfighter is the space equivalent of a jet fighter or bomber, with 1-5 crew. A star cruiser would be the size of a naval cruiser.
-Is what I think.

I see there's no demand for fitting a minifig this time.

In this contest, could I post a destroyer class spaceship, per example? I don't have time or bricks to build one, except in nanoscale, I'm just fishing for what might show up in the competition.

I just joined the Starfighters group, as I saw the contest post on the SCI-Lug group. I enjoyed the small starfighter contest so much I had to join this one, too.

peterlmorris is a group administrator peterlmorris  Pro User  says:

Bionicbadboi: This thread should answer your questions regarding what constitutes a starfighter. A destroyer is not a starfighter.

Also have a look through the pool. There are many different sizes, shapes, and roles (from space superiority to bomber to ultimate superweapon).

Regarding scale: microscale and the somewhat larger n-scale is fine, but make sure you look through nnenn's stuff first. He and Dasnewton have pretty much defined the word awesome at that scale.

Well, I'm already about a third of the way through my entry . . . and I have a question. That is, would be okay if I put up my entry in my photostream once it's complete, to see what folks think of it before I enter it? If not, then that's perfectly fine, and I could see why you wouldn't want me to do so, but it's worth asking, at any rate. :)

Legolord - It depends on how original you make the design. The generic frames are meant to be a jumping-off point.

So far, I've seen folks build slightly modified versions of this frame. But consider that the Archangel itself is built off of a modified version of the frame, and you see there's a HUGE amount of possible variation.

I mean, it's really exciting to see people use that frame, but what I'd really like to see what kinds of wild variations people can get out of it.

Question for the judges: What qualities are you looking for in an entry? Or, what criteria do you expect to consider?

I hope I can carve out some building time for this...

peterlmorris is a group administrator peterlmorris  Pro User  says:

RogueKnight - please see earlier in the discussion - we've already answered that question.

CurtyDC - while it is an interesting suggestion, the prizes are currently organized by part count. I don't want a White Elephant contest. :)

SJ Commander - I would think you wouldn't want to limit yourself on parts. But it is your call.

Retracile - We don't want you guys building to any kind of standard, except this word - "Awesome!" Not very specific, I know, but this contest is going to be ridiculously subjective as it is; we don't need to squabble over criteria.

TO ALL - I highly recommend you look back through the pool, as well as maybe the Vic Viper pool to get a sense of what constitutes Awesome. You'll quickly see there's no rhyme or reason. It's kind of like porn. You can't define it, but you know it when you see it.

How the heck can people gripe that it's only 1 entry per person? That's basically the definition of a contest... you can't run a race and win gold silver and bronze (unless you're chuck norris)

If you want to build multiple entries, showcase them on your photostream first, have your friends tell you which entry is the best, and then submit. It's not that difficult a concept.

Peter: You should have a hidden prize for the first person that submits... :)
I have a feeling a lot of people will bide their time to see the caliber of entries before submitting.

'Bulldog' FX-10 Heavy Fighter

The FX-10 'Bulldog' (as it is called by most of the Veczites' many enemies) is a heavy-duty fighter employed by the Veczites, a malevolent and violent race. The Bulldog is optimized for destruction, with two light blasters, two heavy particle cannons, a concussion-bomb dispenser, and twin torpedo tubes. It is also heavily armored and durable and will last infuriatingly long in any engagement.
