the call . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

AÇÃO URGENTE (português)

We need five minutes of your day, and a FAX machine.

from Amnesty International,
to help the Prestes Maia 468 families.

"A judge has issued a new order to evict the 468 families who have been living
in the derelict Prestes Maia building in central São Paulo for over two years.
The municipal authorities must carry out the order before 4 March. Amnesty
International is concerned that they are not going to provide secure tenure in
adequate alternative accommodation for the families."

Also, some of the residents had been camped out in front of city hall but seem to have been removed. I think people need to be sure to let the prefecture know that suppression of peaceful protest is never wise.

yes, they have been camping there until the prefecture received a commission of them, to negotiate. They made some negotiations about their security and "bolsa-aluguel" (a finacial help, around $140/per month, during 6 months for the families to be able to pay a place to live).
I believe that the prefecture don't want the eviction now, because they hadn't plan nothing to remove all this families, and almost 1.500 people from the building, including many old people and children are going back to the streets of the city.

About the suppression of the peacefull protest, well, I'm afraid, again.

Hi, although personal messages are probably better, do you think that a "template" letter could be proposed (by you?) to be faxed at the indicated persons? (if in Portuguese, it may be joined along our personal messages in our own languages, making it certain that, if they want to, people receiving our faxes would be able to understand).
Sorry that this may mean a bit more work; less sleep.

Hi Pierre, I think will be really nice if they receive letters in english, from different countries, to realize that the "world is wacthing" them.
Maybe what we can do is to create a portuguese title, before your english words, to make them sure what is the fax about. Please, send this today! Here some tips for the fax:

• Add the date, with name of city and your country.
• Include a title:
Protesto contra o despejo das famílias do Prestes Maia
(I protest against the eviction of the Prestes Maia families)
• write a few words asking them a negotiation and a well planned act of eviction, with garanties for the families (what we ask is that they will receive a place to go, a home, with their own things, and security for people during the withdrawal).
• Finally your complete name, ID and your profession.

That would work, because if we send the same letter, they will think that we are sending the same fax... better if they feel that we are many.
But are we many?
I see more than 800 people here, so please people, do what you can, NOW!

They alredy had prepared 350 men from especial force of Military Police, to act next sunday, 25th, and they scare me a lot.

SUSPENDED!!
Eviction is now SUSPENDED!!

Yay!
Yes, the eviction is suspended for 60 days!
Thank you people!!

I'm trying to find the more details about the cancelation of that, but I had just a talk with a lawyer representant of the movement, and he told me that the judge went with the Military Police Commander to the area of the building, and saw how dificult, dangeours and insecure it could be the withdrawal of almost 2000 people... so the judge decided to suspend the eviction for this sunday and gave them 60 days for a new negotiation.
Friends, keep your energy now, and please, stay in touch for the next news.

Thank you so much, all of you!

That is great news!! I had heard yesterday that alternative accommodation had been arranged, but now that the eviction is suspended it is even better!

I think it is still worth sending faxes to keep up the pressure and show that so many people are concerned about Prestes Maia. Is it worth sending faxes to ask that Prestes Maia be converted into suitable apartments for the families, as the previous municipal government promised them?

Thanks for keeping us up-to-date!

Stairz2, those accommodation the prefecture arranged was for less then 30 families, and they are more than 460 families... that's a problem for the Major; and probably one of the motives that the eviction is not going to happen tomorrow.
About the faxes, if you want to send, will be fine, but please, be sure that you will keep your energy for the next colective pressure. It's very dificult to keep many people sending faxes during 60 days, and maybe is better if we do it concetrated in a few days. We probably will need to do it again...
And for the convertion of the building in apartments, that would be perfect. The problem is that some specialized people are saying that the Prestes Maia building has no conditions to be transformed, because it has too many problems, and will coast too much money to recover it. They think is better to destroy it.... in my opinion, this are excuse to remove poor from the downtown, because there is a plan to transform the center of the city in a "turistic" place... but I'm not sure at all.
My dream is: to recover this building, or destroy it, and build a new one for those families there, at Prestes Maia's place.
People were more concentrated in the suspension of the eviction, but if you want to write about it on your fax, it would be nice:)

Thank you all for helping them.
