How did your cat get her name?

In perusing the various pet pools on flickr I’ve noticed an extraordinary array of pet names. Some seem logical enough, names based on appearance or regular “people” names, but some seem downright peculiar. Share how your pet got his name. If you have more than one pet share as many stories as you like. Make it interesting, but not overly long. (Hint: If you’ve typed 10 lines per name and you’re not finished, go back and edit it before posting.)
Thanks for sharing, here’s mine;
My daughter got a dog for her 14th birthday and named him Dante. She had always been interested in art and wanted to name him after the artist Picasso. However, she thought Picasso was too long and didn’t like Pablo either. So after reviewing a list of famous artist she chose to make her new puppy the namesake of Dante Gabriel Rossetti, a 19th century poet and painter. Wouldn’t he be proud?
She also named our previous cat, Zeus, because he acted like he thought he was God.
Our current cat is named Natasha because I like the name. Plus, when we get another cat I can name him Boris. (Think Rocky and Bullwinkle)
Now it's your turn.

Hi! Neat topic! I named my cat Koko after one of the cats in the "The Cat Who...." book series by Lilian Jackson Braun. There are 2 cats in the series, Koko and YumYum, but my YumYum disappeared so I have only Koko now. In the book they are Siamese cats, but my guy is just a regular tiger tabby. But he's a handsome guy!!!

We named Monkey becuase he looks a lot like a Monkey! (see pic below) When he was a kitten he used to balance on his back legs a lot and stick his tail straigh up in the air. He also climbs our palm tree going up like a Monkey and coming down like one. He behaves like a Monkey too and is very charming...

My cat's name is Nokia. I found her one year ago, on the street, and she was very small and skinny, and she stood on the top of a bush like she was a star or something. I fell in love imediately, although I've never had a cat before, and I really wasn't a "cat person". I took her in one hand, and I had my cellphone in the other, and I realised she's so small, just like my phone(a Nokia 3510i), so I named her Nokia, and took her home, and now she's a big girl, full of personality, and very cute and playfull.

pattyh: Come again. In English tumble means tumble. In what language does purzel mean tumble? Great name for a cat by the way, thanks for posting.
To everyone else who posted: Thanks, I enjoyed all of your stories.

We have two cats at home: Kinsey is all white with big green eyes. All of her exposed skin is pink and she only weights 11 lbs so she seems very girlie. Don't be misled. Her favorite activity is fighting with..... Spenser, a 25 lb tuxedo who is sweet as he can be. Kinsey is too - when it suits her. They got their names from two of our favorite "detectives" - Sue Grafton's Kinsey Milhone and Robert Parker's Spenser. My brother and his wife have five cats , several of which are named for jazz musicians.

having 6 cats makes it hard to think of names. when we found Jake at the spca satelite office, i saw him, and he looked at me, and the first words out of my mouth, "and his name is jake". it just happens.

Great topic,

Ours were born in Greece and my white mum cat was a stray who we names Asprouly which is an adaption of white in Greek.

Big Boy was a huge kitten with big ears and hence his name.

Girly was such a feminine kitten, always looking after her siblings and with a sweet voice and a walks with a wiggle - hence Girly just seemed to fit.

Our sadly dead cats were Trouble (as he was always in some)

Filos (greek for friend - as he was my husbands friend)

Stripy - when they were small I could only tell them apart by a white stripe she had down her shoulder - and the name stuck.

Another mainly white cat who we tempoirarily called whitey and that also stuck.

And finally Pondiki - greek for mouse as the was the tiniest runt of the litter and looks mouselike when she was born!

Our youngest cat had been abandoned on a rubbish tip - and nearly died there.
We got her (aged about 5 weeks) on the day of the first performance of a play called "Sugar Daddies" at the Stephen Joseph Theatre. As this kitten had just acquired two sugar daddies of her own, it seemed right to name her after the leading character in the play - Sasha.

Nice topic! My cats are Jazmine Isadora Black (because she told me that is her name) and Jasper Joey Nochin. Jasper, that's what I called him when I first saw him... Jasper like the rock. My mom said he should be Joey... like a baby kangaroo because of his big feet. My sister gave him his last name... his profile, he has no chin.

Great topic!

We have six cats: three littermates, and three who are not related.

Bonnie and Clyde (usually known to us as Baby Clyde) are two of the littermates, and despite their outlaw names, are the most incredibly sweet blue tabbies you could ever hope to meet.

Barbra Streisand, the third littermate and the alpha male (yes, an explanation is coming!), came to us as a beautiful Bengal-like cat with the undignified name of Billy (undignified because it was presumably short for Billy the Kid). We thought he needed a more dignified name, so we started calling him "Noname" for a while until we figured it out. Eventually we realized that he had the same profile as Babs herself, and it just stuck. Also, he has the most sing-song meow of any of the cats, so it fits.

The next adoption was Blackberry, an exotic-looking Bombay-like black cat who came to us as Magellan, and Cocoa before that. I don't remember exactly how we decided on Blackberry, but he's very sweet, so it stuck.

A few months later, we adopted another black cat -- a kitten -- and she was named Angel at the time. It was definitely an ironic name because she was about the most terrifyingly energetic kitten we'd ever seen. Irony is good, but by now we were on a roll with the "B" names and we renamed her Black Cherry.

Finally, we decided that we needed a sixth kitten to round out our Brady-Bunch-esque cat clan, and for parity, it needed to be a female brown tabby with an entertainment name. Luckily, my husband tracked down the world's most adorable kitten, we named her Bopper, and our family is complete.

Until the next round of kitten adoptions, I suppose. :-)

Gnorri is an Italian word we use for those who had done some mischief and are pretending nothing happened, our first cat Gnorri just called for that name! I mean she's a gnorri :-)
Regarding our other cat Omar, I wanted to call him Poldo Sbaffini, a cartoon carachter who continuosly eats sandwiches, but when he came home and was really little he kept hiding and we spent hours looking for him, in the same period on TV they reported looking for Mullah Omar and never succeding in finding him...

Missy - our black kitty. This was her name at the Calgary Humane Society, so we kept it.

Casey - our tonkinese kitty. When we adopted her into our family, her rescuer told us that she seemed to respond to a "K" sound, so we kept brainstorming names until this one came up and we liked it!

Donny and Marie - our two 10 month old white kittens. B/c it was clear when we adopted them from the Calgary Humane Society that they were bro and sis from the same litter, we wanted to find a suitable couple of names that suited each other. These two are named for the famous bro-and-sis duo Donny and Marie Osmond.

Much better than Mork and Mindy, let me tell you!

Iva started out as a "Male Russian Blue Kitten" in the Tangipahoa Parish Animal Shelter, and was called 'Tigs'. I didn't feel that the name 'Tigs' applied, and after trying to come up with a new name, "Ivan the Terrible" seemed to work. Well, turns out the shelter was wrong, and a visit to the vet confrimed my suspision that 'Ivan' was a female. So, we renamed her to Iva because we thought it sounded the closest to Ivan, and figured she didn't need anymore confusion in her life. She is still terrible however (in a cute way).

When I first got Spaz from the Humane Society, I had to wait to name him until I found some personality traits. Even as a kitten, he was a little nuts. I usually sit on the floor when I play guitar, and he literally circled and stalked me while I played. I could see out the corner of my eye his ears flatten out and him start to crouch. And then . . . pounce and attack. It was hilarious to imagine a kitten attacking the shoulder or leg of a full grown man and I thought to myself, "What a spaz!" And he only reinforces my decision by catching everything from birds to earthworms and "playing" with Meg the pit bull (and usually giving more than he gets). He's now 20 pounds and not at all fat. He's only been around dogs, so he sometimes goes for walks with us and knows some commands. My neighbor said he's never seen a cat answer to "come" before. :)

"The naming of cats is a difficult matter, It isn't just one of your holiday games..."
- T.S. Eliot -

Our Minou was given to us by a French Canadian acquaintance. We are told that it means "Pussy cat" in French.

When our children were small a friend named Lee gave us a Siamese kitten. I wanted to name him "Lee" after our friend but the kids wanted to call him "Sam". So for a while he went by the name of "Lee-Sam" which evolved into "Li-san" (sounded very oriental to us). Li-san was a treasured member of our household till passing from kidney failure at 16 years.

Buster is named after Buster Keaton because of his huge feet and comedy pratfalls. Boo was named Sterling when I adopted him. He was so shy when I first brought him home that he did nothing but hide under the bed for two weeks, only coming out at night to eat. I mentioned to one friend that it was "worse than trying to make Boo Radley come out" (from To Kill a Mockingbird). All of my friends agreed that Boo Radley was a better name for him than Sterling.

Palomita Jumping
Palomita got her name because she used to jump alot when she was a kitten. Palomita means "popcorn" in Spanish.

Pixels
Pixels is a bit more obvious. She got her name becuase of all of the spots and splotches of colour she has. It's a geeky name and it stuck.

We have always had cats throught our married life. (see my previous post from a year ago above) However two years ago we sold our house, bought an RV and live & travel fulltime in our RV. We took our two old friends, Simba & Minou with us but after they both passed due to old age we decided to not get another cat.
WRONG!!!
After about four months we broke down and adopted a lovely little black & white kitten. He weighed 4 lbs. at the time and now one year later tips the scale at 16 lbs.
We named him Nasdaq because we thought we'd invest in a cat.
