About UCLA Photographic Portraiture

This course provides a comprehensive and well-rounded exploration into the art and craft of photographic portraiture. Students learn and practice both traditional and nontraditional approaches to portraiture using a variety of techniques and styles driven by the question "What should a portrait reveal about both the subject and the photographer who created it?" Work of recognized masters in the field is examined, and the various elements of portraiture, such as dealing with subjects, composition, lighting, mood, and atmosphere, are discussed. Weekly assignments are critiqued in class with an emphasis on developing a personal style. Location and studio shoots involve working with live models.
