About Edward Burne Jones
This pool intends to celebrate the work of one of the greatest artists Britain ever produced, Sir Edward Coley Burne Jones, 1833-1898.
Burne Jones created some of the most hauntingly beautiful, dreamlike paintings of the Pre Raphaelite movement in the latter half of the nineteenth century, but is equally famous for his enormous contribution to Victorian stained glass through his work as a designer in that medium, principally through collaboration with his near life long friend William Morris.
Sir Edward Burne Jones remains one of the most cherish artists of the period, with an instantly recognisable style of figure drawing which emphasised the sacred over the profane, creating a more spiritual beauty suggestive of dignity, purity and innocence to an extent unequalled since. His faces may at times seem perhaps repetitive and somewhat over familiar, and yet rarely are they anything other than a pleasure to behold.
This pool will welcome images of the artwork of Edward Burne Jones in any medium, be they a major painting or window, or the smallest drawing, print, or book illustration.
Burne Jones was an excellent painter, and his work will be found in several UK galleries (and further afield) as well as stately homes (Buscot Park in Oxfordshire, which holds his stunning 'Briar Rose' series).
His work in stained glass remains as popular as ever, and was produced for countless churches across Britiain, and windows using his designs continued to be made even after his death in 1898 (the cartoons were often reused many times over as demand for Morris & Co stained glass increased towards the end of the nineteenth century onwards).
Several of his designs were reproduced in tapestry to stunning effect and can be seen in certain churches and public collections (the Grail Series in Birmingham City Art Gallery & Museum being perhaps his finest).
The American Church in Rome possesses a stunning cycle of mosaics produced to his designs, though largely executed after his death.
