Vignetting

Markus foto [deleted] says:

I just ebayed a Holga with glass lense,,do these cameras naturally cause vignetting, or is there something you are doing to them to make them do this,,,I ordered this camera for the vignetting that seems to be present in almost all the photos.. thanks

Vignetting happens with Holga because the lens is little smaller than the film size. However, I dont know about the glass lens, and I use only the plastic stuff.

some holgas will vignet more than others. i have seen some that don't at all, some that are very strong, others that are very soft.

it is all about the unknown

The glass ones vignette as well. Try the Woca!

I think it depends on the model of Holga. My Holga 35 MF doesn't vignette at all.

I didn't think mine did, until I started looking at the negatives more closely. The proofs that I was getting from the lab cut out the vignetting, so now I scan my own negatives instead.

Can anyone tell me what's the difference with the 6x6 mask and with no mask at all?

holgasmena8m. With the mask you get less vignetting and less light leak. Less fun also. Size is different as well.

My holga does not vignette much so I am considering buying another one. I say a promo that suggested we each need at least 6 cameras as each one has its own personality.

So the pics will be square but a little bigger. Is that it?

re the mask: the upshot of using the 6x6 is that it protects the film somewhat--provides a smoother feed, reduces the chance of scratching. I find it also very helpful when I'm using 35mmm film in the holga.

I got a lot of vignetting on my Polaroids with the Holgaroid back. But w/o the back I don't usually get too much of the vignette effect.

stOOpidgErL> where did you get your Holgaroid back? a quick look on ebay shows one for $160+ :\

I notice more vignetting when I shoot in bright sunlight, maybe because the dark corners are just more noticeable. Increasing the contrast in Photoshop also helps!

Re: the mask - removing the mask also shifts the focal plane back, as the film is a little further away from the lens without the mask. It may have an impact on vignetting as well as focus.

Yep i see more vignetting shooting in sunlight too, but do you get an opposite vignetting, say bright edges, when shooting with flashlight?

this is what i get:

i'm getting a strange reverse vignette when i print, yet the negative shows signs of having normal vignette, light corners on the negative. i'm trying to pinpoint how it's happening.

what's the deal?

That looks like lens flare rather than vignetting. Try shooting away from the sun and see if it still happens.

AFabiano says:

your right, it does indeed look like flare. but if i remember correctly, both of the shots are with the sun behind me. i'm guessing it has something to do with the enlarger.

I find that slide film seems to give darker edges.

Possibly because slide film has a narrower exposure latitude.
