About Fête de la musique
(Excerpted and translated roughly from the French government's website.)
Fête de la musique is not a festival. It is a large gathering open to all amateur or professional participants and taking place each year for millions of curious people.
It blends all musical genres and and is aimed toward all with the objective of popularizing music in public and familiarizing youth and the less youthful of all classes with all styles of music. It is the opportunity to speak freely in music.
Musicians are invited to play as they wish and all performances are free for the public, whether indoors or outdoors. The venues are outdoors, in streets, in plazas, in gardens, in courtyards, in museums or in castles, but the Fête is also an opportunity to suggest that large musical institutions leave their walls and welcome other musical genres. The Fête offers the chance to create currents of exchange between central urban areas and suburbs, to consider concerts in hospitals or in prisons, to develop encounters and exchanges.
Launched in France in 1982, the Fête has become a European and international feast now taking place in over 100 countries on five continents every June 21. In adapting itselt to each country's customs, the Fête was able to reinvent itself and become an emblematic international musical event.
