how much time it take to render a hdr image?
Posted 32 months ago.
|
|
Both pictures were taken one after the other. The iA images has 1/8sec exposure, the high dynamic image has 1/25 exposure. Both iso400 (that the highest my intelligent iso allows).
It takes the same amount of time to render/save the high dynamic image.
The darker areas are particularly noisy (intelligent exposure is being applied, I guess, allowing higher iso values in darker areas).

I like the HDR option in the crude tests I did, but don't like the fact that it only works in ISO 400. Shadow details are well rendered though contrast and saturation seem to be turned down.

Here's mine:

I notice some highlights were slightly blown out but this scene mode is just amazing.
I imagine it would work very well for sunset/sunrise photos at the beach as well.

Yesterday I took my LX3 for the first v.2.0 HDR walk to the forrest. Did you notice that in some landscape compositions in High Dynamic mode - e.g. between dark tree line and bright sky - there happens a brighter halo?
How do you find it? Is it painful? Looks a bit unnatural to me, though some photography handbooks say a bright strip between the ground and the sky is natural (what may happen also when we use an ND grad filter).
[BTW, I heard the same issue exists in bigger & pricier Pentax K-7.]

I did notice the halo effect too. It is common in most HDR tone mapping software and in-camera dynamic range processes as the local region brightness is adjusted to help with boosting smaller detail contrast.

"it only works in ISO 400" Is that true. Have not updated the new firmware yet but if the HDR mode only works at 400 that sucks because I try not to shoot anything over 200 cause of noise since I print alot of my pics.

@ramseur78:
Yes, unfortunately, that is true. I believe the only sensible reason for that is the fact the camera is making (just guessing) 2 or 3 shots at various exposures within a very short time (something like EV bracketing, but much faster) - and ISO400 minimizes the risk the camera (hand-held all the time) is moved between or during the shots.
Obviously, it's not good as far as the noise is concerned: ISO80 would be cleaner; but don't forget the noise is most annoying in shadows, and there are not as many dark areas in HDR as in normal EV range shots.
For me it's also no good I cannot manually change the aperture in the High Dynamic mode. Well, it looks I have to accept this, or use v.2.0's increased EV bracketing and a tripod, which is, honestly, not my favourite tool;-)

You think a "false HDR" technology, sometimes utilized by RAW files users? So why they would keep it as high as ISO400?...
For instance: Pentax said their K-7 uses three frames. Sony Alpha 550 and Fuji F200EXR are using two frames. I hope such info is finally revealed by Panasonic.

I think it is a refinement of their 'intelligent exposure' technique, attributing higher iso values to darker segments of the sensor.
Take a look at this picture, the right hand (dark) side: it is much more grainy compared to the rest. (click it to watch in full size).

Tech dictionary:
In digital camera terminology, Intelligent Exposure is a function of the camera that helps to avoid blown highlights and blocked shadows by suppressing the extreme brightness and darkness in the picture. This function works by partially controlling the ISO sensitivity to increase the exposure of only the darkened area when there is backlighting or insufficient flash lighting to capture the scene as viewed by the photographer through the camera. Intelligent Exposure is a function found in many Panasonic brand digital cameras. On Nikon brand of digital cameras, the similar function is called D_Lighting.

I think we need to realize the new high dynamic sceen mode is not HDR, if it was panasonic would call it that! The camera is not taking multiple exposures.

HDR in camera by using multi-exposure mode at Aperture priority or Manual.
Start with +2 (or more) EV, then 2nd shot -2EV and 3rd shot -3EV.
Just experiment. You could get natural looking HDRs this way without any software.

So is High Dynamic setting in new firm ware same as HDR with auto bracket feature?
Posted 31 months ago.
|
|
no, two different things, well kind of the same, but different...
High Dynamic is a new scene mode, where the camera takes one shot, and does its best to get you an HDR image with one shot
but more interesting to me, is the new firmware update allows us to auto bracket +/- 3!
i may be wrong, but before we could only autobracket +/- 1?
here is my first photo i took when i autobracket +/- 2. I took this photo literally seconds after updating my firmware from the laptop on the desk.

Yes you are correct. Prior to firmware it was -/+1 now it is -/+3. I have been shooting one single raw and then tone map in photomatix pro. I will compare to HD setting to see if there is any major differrence.
Your shot. That was autobracketig? What software did you use?

hey 2-dots..yeah, i auto bracketed +/- 2 Was JPEG, and used same program, photomatix. that program is great, but its a headache to get everything looking how you want it.
after that, i tweaked it using the free stuff in picnic, i think its a nice way to make photos pop a little. but maybe photoshop would've been better.

It would be nice if you can change the ISO down to 80 or 100.
Today I made another one, autobracked and then in Photomatix, will post it soon.

In HD setting the shutter time goes not slower then 1/8 sec?
I imposted my on to 1 sec.
Nothing changes if you change EV + 2 or - 2, anybody has noticed that?
or am I wrong?
Controlling the shots above in the exit data I didnt find a slower time then 1/8 sec.

From my experience, in the High Dynamic mode -/+3 EV compensation works normally, and, surprisingly, -/+3 EV bracketing is also available. Tested on version 2.0.
