I don't know about the LX2, but I do know that the batteries from my Leica D-Lux2 work with my LX3, so I'd guess they probably might....

Thanks, fuzzy_one. Since the D-Lux2 is physically exactly the same as the LX2, I think there's a 99% probability the LX2 batteries will fit.
Now it's just a matter of deciding if I want to toss an extra $200 on the viewfinder. (I LOVE the viewfinder, but man... $200?)

You can put any viewfinder on it - there are several current ones by Voigtlander, also pricey but not 200, and also any old viewfinder from the 50's-60's rangefinders - there's even a Russian turret finder with multiple framelines. Now that one would look interesting.

The LX3 uses the same battery as the DMC-FX01, DMC-FX3, DMC-FX07, and DMC-FX9 models as well.
Search for the manufacturer model# DMWFXACKIT
I recently bought two of these kits for $8.88 each from Circuit City. I have since received them and the batteries in the kit are identical in size, shape and model number to the battery that came with my LX3. The bonus cases that came with the kit don't fit the LX3, but for $8.88 each I'm plenty happy... :)

Well, I finally got myself an LX3, and I can confirm that the batteries are the same, since I walked out of the store, took the battery out of my LX2 and popped it into my LX3 and started using it right away.

amazon has unbranded generic ones pretty cheap from a few sellers, but i don't think i've seen any particularly special deals on the real thing.
that said, i've been using my fx01 battery as a spare so i've not done too much digging. good luck!

The LX3 battery is exactly the same battery used in the LX2. Even though it isn't listed on the box. Keep this in mind, if you are upgrading. I have 3 batteries for my LX2, so when I finally get an LX3, I won't need any more batteries....
Panasonic actually does a good job of using the same battery in different models.
Here's a complete list of all the Panasonic cameras that use this battery:
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX1,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX2,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-LX3,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX01,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX07,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX3,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX8,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX9,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX10,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX12,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX50,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX100,
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FX150,
I've had very good luck with replacement batteries from BestBatt.com, which sell for $9.98 each...
Incidentally, BEWARE of "genuine Panasonic batteries" selling on ebay for $15 or $20. These are very likely generic batteries in counterfeit packaging. There is probably nothing wrong with them, but you will be paying twice the price just to have the fake "Panasonic" logo on it. Just like those $20 Rolex watches. If something is selling for too big a discount on ebay.... then it might not be the real thing.

Just to revive this a bit...any advice, Marty and others, on buying non-genuine batteries for the LX-3? I see some that are 3.6 volts instead of the original 3.7 volts. And sometimes the aMh differs from the original 1150.
I want a cheap back-up battery, but will primarily use the original. Just don't want to do harm to the camera or charger, or lose quality on photos when using an inferior battery.
Looking forward to advice! Thanks...

Personally I would avoid the ebay cheap batterys.
I bought some for my casio and they were very poor quality.
The insulation was rubbish and they were not the correct voltage when I tested them.
If your in the US then I would take Marty's advise and get one from bestbatt.
Does anybody know where to buy a second battery in the UK?

Thanks, Matt. The one at bestbatt is listed at 3.6/3.7 volts. So still curious about that issue, and any other implications. There's one at ebatts that's 3.6 volts.

I ordered a replacement battery for AUD$5.00 [USD$3.30] with free shipping from Hong Kong to Australia. Couldn't really say no at that price. Just curious to see how bad [or good] these cheapy batteries really are. It's labeled 3.7v 1150mAh, same as stock.
Local electronics store wanted AUD$60 [USD$40] for a generic replacement. Hate to think what a genuine Panasonic one would be worth. But the generic has no guarantee that it'll be any better or worse than my $5 one so I'll take my chances.

I'm using a Duracell DR9709 which appears to be working fine with both the LX3 and its charger, although its too early to comment on long term use. Available from this UK online store:

@Number Six, the blurb says:
Guaranteed to meet or exceed the original manufacturer's specifications for the CGA-S005E Battery.
But then states:
Voltage: 3.7 V
Capacity: 1000 mAh
Thinks they should have checked the Panasonic spec sheet. I'm sure it'll do the job though.

Does anybody bought one of this batteries?:
cgi.ebay.es/Battery-for-Panasonic-LX3-LX2-FX150-FX100-as-...
They have good price ($12.99) & free shipping. The feedback is also very good: +55000 votes (wich 99.8% are positive).
They say the battery "has a standard protection circuit module (PCM) that prevent the battery from overcharging, over-discharging and over current. The PCM not only maintains safety, but also prevents significant deterioration of the cell performance, and thus prolong the battery life. That tells the difference between the high quality battery and the dirt cheap counterparts available in the market".

I would not be at all concerned about the difference in voltage ( 3.6 vs 3.7) volts quoted on the Duracell spec sheet.
They are Lithium-Ion batteries which have a nominal voltage of 1.2 Volts per cell, there are 3 individual cells connected in series inside the battery itself to give 3.6V

When I bought my LX3 from Broadway Photo, they had to have me call to "verify the order". This seemed to be mainly a ploy to sell me accessories. They were offering some special "long life" replacement battery. I didn't listen much at the time because I was just annoyed that they had delayed my order 24 hours to do this "verification" by phone.
Is there such a thing as a special long life battery for the LX3?

I got the above mentioned 1150mAh for AUD$5.00 with free shipping to Australia and also a 1400mAh for AUD$9.00 with free shipping both off eBay and both seem to work just as good as my stock Panasonic one. Haven't done any thorough testing to try and drain them on a timer taking video or something. But certainly if I just take them out and shoot a couple hundred shots in a day it isn't even close to running out.
How on earth they manage to sell them so cheap and still make a profit I do not know. Definitely not an inferior or sub standard product in any way. Makes you realise where the margins are for the retailers and all the middle men in between.

I can confirm Marty's advice r.e. using Bestbatt.com. I took his advice and ordered the:
"Part Number: BBS005-01 Panasonic CGA-S005A/1B DMW-BCC12 Li-Ion Rechargeable Digital Camera Battery"
from them. They were about $10 each. I bought two, and they work like a charm. I've done no formal testing, but they seem to last as long as my OEM battery.
Thanks for the advice, Marty! Always nice to find a deal :).

I have used generic nonbranded batteries in every camera i have owned, never had a problem. as for a difference of 0.1volt, the voltage rating is a bit arbitrary anyway, the 12volt battery in your car is about 14volts when fully charged and about 10 when your car won't start.

Had used a Lenmar DLP005, but upon its third recharge noticed ever so slight a swelling toward its center. Contacted their tech support who advised that the battery be returned for replacement. Am now wary of third-party batteries.

372.dpi,
that battery works.
I am on its second charge cycle (i'm alternating with the original one) and haven't had a problem with it. it seems to last just as long as the original (although i haven't done any scientific comparison to back the claim up), and it seems worth the money - this until my camera explodes :)

@ chimidoro
I just got a pair and put them in my LX3 - they work BUT they got stuck in my camera - first time I've ever had any problems with a 3rd party battery - I had to use extra sticky double sided tape to give the battery a pull to remove.
Not sure if the 1400mAH rating meant the battery was bigger than the OEM - but I'm looking at buying another type of battery.
The pair only cost me $7 Canadian so I'm not terribly upset.

If the battery GETS stuck (thus slides in easily and then gets stuck after time) you better replace it asap. Li-ion cells expand because they internally heat up, and that's not a good sign. Replacement is always better then kaboom, especially with this chemistry.

@ Pallieter85
Thanks for the info. I thought that the charging/heat issue might have been the case but since I had 2 of these batteries I put in the cold, uncharged one and it went in no problem but got stuck too.
I'm not sure if these are ever so slightly heavier and bigger than the OEM battery that's preventing them from ejecting properly but I'm tossing them as it's too much hassle to get tape and yank them out every time. I chalk up to a poor 3rd party copy of the battery.
I've ordered another 3rd party battery off eBay and we'll see how that goes.
