What camera did you have before your LX3?

view profile

petrusko.rm is a group administrator petrusko.rm  Pro User  says:

Before the LX3 my favourite compact was my Ricoh GX100. I liked it for its wideangle and nice IQ and stuff.

I think the IQ of the LX3 is better. I love the fast lens, the big high res LCD-screen. The IA-functions is really nice in many situations, backlight for ex.

The LX3 looks cool and offers very nice features. I think its awesome!

Best regards.

My previous "little camera" was the Fuji F-10. I loved the low light capabilities of the Fuji F series cameras, but I waited too long to get a newer one; now I hear the pixel-wars has gotten the better of Fuji and they strayed from the superior quality of their low light photos in the quest to pack more megapixels into a little camera.

My other digital camera is a Canon 400D/XTi. I also shoot with a bunch of film cameras, the Minolta X-700, Olympus XA, Olympus Trip 35, the Vivitar Ultra Wide & Slim, and a fixed focus point & shoot Ricoh from my high school days.

I'm liking the LX3 so far. It's got a lot of features and I'm slowly wading through the manual. (Yes, I'm one of those people who reads the entire camera manual!)

All sorts of cameras, film and digital, mainly SLRs. The LX3 is my third digital compact, the other two are Olympus MJUs. I like the LX3 for it's IQ controllability and that its a good camera to hold and And the lens......awesome.

I had a Lumix FX8 before this, and probably would still have it if I hadn't done something bad to it. I also have a Canon Rebel XTi and was really craving an in-between camera -- something good in low light but small and easy to carry around. I adore my LX3 and am also going through manual like cycle nut.

I have an EOS 10D and 5D. Those are my serious cameras, i.e. the ones that stay safe in the bag most of the time.

I had a Canon G7 but I gave it to my Dad in July because the LX3 was due in August according to reports. That was trusting of me.

Before the G7 I had a Powershot S40 which I also gave away to my brother in law. I liked that one but it eventually started taking overly soft pictures, like the focus was losing its grip.

I had a Canon EOS Elan IIe until a few months ago, but I gave it away on freecycle to a photography student who was required to get a real film camera and had NEVER HAD ONE. Made me feel old.

I still have my Yashica T4 Super which I love/loved to death, but developing film turned into hassle after "Boro Photo" closed in my neighborhood.

In the dim and distant past I had an Olympus OM10 and then an OM40, both bit the dust in service leaving me camera-less (I was completely broke in those days).

I also had a Kodak APS camera at some point but I forget what happened to it. Once I got the Yashica i never took APS again, that was awful.

You want the long list or the short list? Okay the short list.

Kodak CX7525 - no longer have, old camera
Canon A560 - busted after six months, not kid safe :) Not cost effective to repair either.
D40x - no longer have, nice but very limited
EOS 40D - no longer have, great camera
D90 - great camera
TZ5 - wife and daughter's camera, very nice little camera, daughter uses it mostly
LX3 - soon to be here, will be used as my everyday camera

I still try to use the R1 from time to time and as a holiday camera, it takes a lovely picture and I couldn't bare to part with it. It does feel a bit slow now (especially compared to my slr) and the noise in low light is a killer. It would be great to see something like the LX3 coming from a company like Sony.

The reason I got the LX3 is because I loved the ergonomics of the LX2, but didn't find the image quality quite up to snuff. So the LX3 replaces the LX2 in my gear bag.

I have owned, borrowed, and used a few other cameras, as well.

Back in the day I had various crappy point-and-shoot digitals in the 3mp range. I've been shooting digital exclusively with DSLRs for the past few years, as I never found a compact that fit my preferences. The LX-3 is now a supplement to my D300 and D70 SLRs (and my fleet of film cameras of all sorts).

I've been using the LX-3 mainly for stealth street shooting - Cartier Bresson would have LOVED this camera! It's fantastic for street work - so quiet, fast (f/stop wise), wide, and unobtrusive. After my D300 it makes me feel invisible!

Three previous cameras: Canon Ixus 400, a Fujifilm APS compact, Minolta XG-1. And a Nokia E90 cameraphone.

LX3 definetely has taught a lot about photography in one week already. I'm slowly starting to remember how to shoot using aperture priority, which was the way of photography with Minolta XG-1.

I had the Sony DSC-U20 that I got after it was discontinued (just to have a tiny camera). It did decent work for 2MP and its size. That was several years ago.

I picked up the Fuji Z5 to replace it and it was nice, but very limited. Ultimately, the lack of spot metering made me give it up. It also didn't focus that quickly.

I had the Nikon P5100 for about a day. It can't focus worth crap.

I've had the LX3 for a couple of days now and so far so good.

I sold a Nikon D50 as it was getting no use but to tell the truth the LX3 is no substitute for a DSLR. I very interested in the G1 as it seems small enough to not be too much of a burden to carry all day, and I love the idea of having a camera with more or less the same interface as the P&S I'm using. Is anyone else thinking about buying into this new system?

But as P&S go it reminds me of my old Olympus 5050 which was a head of its time in terms of customizable features.

We still use the Fuji F10 around he house and that chip is amazing. That chip in a LX3 would be HEAVEN.

blork  Pro User  says:

My last camera was an LX2, which I quite liked, except there were some obvious shortcomings.

I became very interested in the Sigma DP1 while it was being developed. So interested I started a blog about it before it was even launched (My DP1).

All that writing about the DP1 really got me focused on what I didn't like about the LX2, yet it also made me sort of fall in love with it again. When the DP1 finally came out, it was a disappointment from a handling point of view, and I ended up transferring what I liked about the DP1 into my "wish list" for the LX2's inevitable (and then overdue) replacement.

Well. It's as if the people at Panasonic were reading my DP1 blog. I couldn't believe it when the LX3 was announced. It was as if they had asked me personally what improvements I wanted!

Obviously, development of the LX3 started long before I wrote my wish list, but it shows how much the LX3's design, and in particular its marketing, was influenced by the DP1. In particular, the marketing talk at launch was torn completely from the DP1 book. All that talk about image quality, larger sensor, SLR companion, less noise with fewer megapixels, etc., is pure DP1 talk.

But of course Panasonic nailed it where Sigma didn't; on handling.

I stepped up to an Olympus C8080 several years ago. What a great camera for this beginner. Well-built, reliable, and a very nice lens for the time without stepping up to the dSLR, but still a little bulky.

I had been jonsing for a new camera to carry around and began researching and settled on the LX3. I just received it today and was quite surprised by build quality and how substantial this small camera is. I do miss my flip out LCD, but wow is that LX3 LCD nice!
While still in fine shape, the Olympus C8080 is going to be gathering some dust, lol.

My first compact was Leica Digilux 4.3, which is a rebadged Fuji Funepix 4700 or something.
I used it for only a few months before my mom dropped it :'(

Then came the Nikon Coolpix 995 as a backup for my Nikon F100 in 2002.

In 2005 I bought the LX1 and loved it a lot despite all shortcomings.

Finally with LX3, I have a good enough compact.

My previous camera was a Sony V3, which I still think is fantastic. However, there were times when I thought, "Gee, I wish it worked better in low light," or "Gee, I wish it went wider than 34mm." Then along came the LX3...

I still use a Canon 40D as my primary camera and also a Canon XT. I wanted a smallish camera i can put in a jacket pocket to always have on me when I can't possibly take my SLR(s). So I got the LX3 because it has the manual functions I want, image quality, and it's still pretty small. Now I'm worried i will leave the SLRs behind too often :)

My last camera was a Canon Powershot Pro1, really loved it but last month I broke the flipout lcd which set me off looking for my next camera. Weeks of agonising over LX3 v G10. I'm now happy to have chosen the LX3 but I can't get my paws on it until my wife gives it me on Christmas Day!

I mainly use film cameras, but the digital camera I replaced with LX3 is sadly now deceased GR Digital. Well it's not completely dead yet, but many physical problems and not really usable.

LX3 would be really perfect if it had (new firmware please?) step zoom and custom function with zoom position memorized.

I had a G9 and gave it to my son who is going to art school. The only thing I miss is the histogram real time settings on screen.

Just ordered my LX3 after much reading (between it and the G10). My first real digital camera, because I was spending so much on film and processing. Anyway, my uncle's old Canon TX w/ 135 mm and my beloved Contax G2 w/35 mm lens. I'm still debating if I should sell the G2, but I'll never get rid of my TX.

I have a G2 too, a bunch of Canon DSLR gear, LX2, LX1, even the YashicaMat I bought new in high school that's sitting in plain sight from here. And a Leica M5, Nikon F2's, Canon A's and F-1, Minolta XG, Hasselblad 500CM, lots of compact 35mm cameras, a IIIc,... I'll shoot with most anything and probably have. I like the LX3 it's a good little box and weighs a good deal less than my 6-lb Canon! :)

I had the LX2, which I used along with an Olympus E300, for street/nightlife/art photography. I sold them both and now use the LX3 as my take-everywhere camera. I'm keeping my 4/3rds lenses though-waiting for the perfect micro-cam.

Only previous digital was a Canon IXUS-50 (aka SD400) which I still have, although the flash has died (long story involving seawater and a leaky underwater case.) Great little camera, tiny, no pretensions, easiliy pocketable, did what it did well. The LX3 was up against its logical sucessor the IXUS-90 for me. The choice being another simple but good point and shoot, or double the money and a camera with ability. LX3 won. Experience with the Fuji 645Zi (below) helped sway the choice. As well as the super wide on the LX3.

My main camera has been and still is a Mamiya 645 Super, for which I have most of the lenses. Apart from maybe the upcoming Leica S2 not much is going to compete with that as far as I am concerned. And subject to a lottery win there isn't going to be an S2 in my life anytime soon.

Other camera is a Fuji 645Zi, which is a lovely camera, and in many ways the high end film sibling to the LX3. 2:1 zoom, autofocus, various auto-exposure modes, rangefinder. Takes utterly fabulous pictures. But in this modern age it costs me $2 each time I hit the shutter on either film camera (almost invariably on Fuji Velvia.) I worry that the LX3 will have the film cameras see less and less use. But we will see. For jawdropping quality of the final result nothing beats medium format film.

Well I've owned a lot of cameras, but here's my last three:

LX1

LX2

LX3

the LX1 was amazing, the LX2 didn't look as good to me. Got the LX3 today and am so far blown away.

gpfahey: What do you think about the function of the Live View on the Nikon D300? Would you say it works as well as a good P&S Live View?

I have a Alpha300 and the live View is awesome. I'm dreaming of a Full Frame and I'm thinking of the Nikon D700. I asume the Live View on that works just the same as the D300.

(The reason I want a Full Frame is that I dont want the 1,6 crop factor of a APS-sensor. I think it ruins the capacity of the type of lens I want.
A good standard lens turns tele on a APS-sensor.

I had a nice little Canon Powershot A640 that I dropped and broke when I slipped on some ice a couple weeks ago. We also have a Canon G3 that I had lent indefinitely to my mom, but when I took it back after the 640 broke, it seemed that the LCD screen was no longer working. Two camera mishaps in a row!

But, it was all for the best. My boyfriend is crazy about this camera and I am sure I will love it, too -- I will be using it for both shooting my artwork and for reference photos, and family gatherings... :) All-purpose.
