Oh god, that is truly terrible. I don't think I can find anything that can match this. You have to be amazed by the speed of reply to your post - 4 months! And yet, I know you are not the only person with severe hdr allergy.

Hey Agata, I saw this group in your stream and had to join.
I can't tell you how glad I am to know that I'm not alone. I've hated HDR from the first time I saw it on Flickr. The fastest way to get dropped from my contact list is to start posting HRD images with those ghastly grey skies. I've seen exactly one HDR photo that worked - worked in the sense that it looked great and I didn't realize it was HDR until I saw the tag.
I don't want to post a worst of example because I don't think that any examples should benefit from the hits a link would generate.
Yours curmudgeonly,
-Neil

The idea is good - to avoid over- and underexposed areas - but the results we see here, that's a different story ... :(
If you really want to spoil your day, try searching Extreme + hdr, click at your own risk.

How is this ugly thing in the "top HDR" group?

And then there's these:

And this one not only has HDR, and oversaturation, but also has a HORRIBLE fake depth of field:

Ha! How ironic. I become sick of HDR, find this group...and see three of my photos (old HDR ones I assume) referenced in this thread! I've been culling my photostream of some of the most atrocious ones so unfortunately I don't know which three received the dubious distinction of being mentioned by driftingfocus. Thank you, this has given me a good laugh!

Antennae,
RE: www.flickr.com/photos/tjeann/580590029/
So he took some regular old lady and HDR'd her face into a grotesque Yoda oblivion and everyone thinks it's great? HDR makes my eyes water...then bleed. So horrible. What's wrong with all these people posting congratulatory comments? This is how photography is bludgeoned to death, isn't it?
This guy is a chronic offender:

I don't think that is an HDR image. I think it's a Photoshop technique, or maybe done with a Photoshop plug-in such as Lucisart.
Have a look at this photographer's website: www.davehillphoto.com/ and this technique: www.johnpaulcaponigro.com/lib/downloads/technique/HighPas... to see what I mean.

makes me vomit. I'm no professional by any standard. But still it sickens me that people are praising these horrible horrible HDR images. And I believe most of them to be american, like myself. This is simply for the reason that it seems that we as americans (maybe human beings) need to keep getting more and more extreme things. More intensely flavored junk food, larger and larger energy drinks, more patties on our burgers, more channels, etc...
Another thing I want to put out there, having been somewhat familiar with photoshop since I was a sophomore in high school this whole HDR thing gives me a total flashback to the moment my junior year when the 'artsy' photography students figured out how to use filters and everyone thought that any photo that had the photocopy or charcoal filter applied was pure artistic nirvana. Suddenly every kid started up their myspace page with one of these horrendous looking pictures. 3 years later, it's the same. Only now, HDR is king.

I see that one you just posted a link to was submitted to the "Realistic HDR Group".. Yeah Right!!! How is that realistic!
I actually think HDR should be called LDR, most of the HDR images I've seen look very flat, they look like they're mainly composed of midtones, and the sort of lovely garish unnatural colors only a computer can give you...

In the right hands and with the right picture and given the right degree of "treatment" HDR can be pleasing to the eye. However most Flickrites belong to "None of the above" and just go WAAAYYYYYY overboard. Hopefully it's just a passing fad and these people will realise that the effort involved in producing such bilge is wasted. In celebration of finding this group I shall now endeavour to post the dullest image from my photostream. There are MANY candidates for that honour but no HDR thankfully.

this chap has a picture that would be bad anyway, and made worse by supersat and HDR .
Just imagine how good this could be if you took the right hand side and the rain and umbrellas in low-key (or B/W)!
He also has a set called HDR and indicates his favourite !

Now there is EXTREME HDR.

I agree with all of you about extreme HDR. These examples are the cream of the crop for bleeding eye's. There are a few folks out there that dont overdo it. Here is one.
www.flickr.com/photos/jeffreysullivan/3306392197/in/set-7...
So you cant say you hate ALL hdr if it's done the right way.
Here is an IR one I did in HDR. I used it because the shadow under the bridge was underexposed with a regular shot, and the sky was a bit blown out if I wanted the shadow detail. I need 3 exposures. I would come back to this spot to get better light, but it was a rare chance for me, as I dont visit this location often.
www.flickr.com/photos/bibbeek/3325463489/
This one is a single RAW tonemapped. Your definition of HDR with only one exposure. There was a highlight a little blown out on the frogs cheek and tonemapping allowed me to tone down the highlight and allow me to get more detail
www.flickr.com/photos/bibbeek/3200223232/
Are they all that eye bleeding?

Kenneth - no, but it seems you are using the HDR technique as a tool to enhance a shot whereas the example I gave above and many other horrible HDR shots are all about HDR and not about anything else.
In the shots I was pointing out, there is no subject apart from the use of HDR. The photograph is ABOUT HDR. And that's what I see in a lot of shots posted to Explore and given fifteen thousand animated GIF awards.
E.g. www.flickr.com/photos/rags1969/3257057949/
What annoys me particularly about these is that apart from being eye-bleeders they don't take so much skill or imagination, because in a lot of cases all the person has done is used PhotoMatix software (or whatever it's called) - if they had thought about the shot, subject, composition, framing, everything that makes a photograph a _photograph_ then their work would be more interesting to me.
Whatever, it's a bandwagon, something else will replace it soon, 3D or whatever... :)

Lazy photographers do lazy photos, they'd rather not learn to expose properly they rather sit on their ass using $99 Photmatix and pass it off as high art.
Well the herd likes it judging by all the WOW! and That's Amazing Comments.
