Group Brief Updated March 2011

Our MACRO-LIFE group goal is to assemble a collection of the best Macro-Photography on Flickr.

By definition, MACRO-Photography means capturing images life-size (1:1) or larger. See en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Macro_photography. Unfortunately, most of the “macro” groups on Flickr accept close-up photographs as macro, which dilutes the discipline of true macro-photography. It is the intent of the MACRO-LIFE group to preserve and perpetuate true macro-photography.

The typical CMOS sensor on the average digital camera is roughly 16-mm high x 24-mm wide (standard DX format). This means that an insect measuring 24-mm long would fill the camera’s field-of-view at 1:1 magnification, and fill the captured digital image, edge-to-edge. In reality, some insect subjects are longer than 24-mm, requiring less magnification to capture the entire insect. This is an acceptable exception to the ideal 1:1 macro imaging. Another exception is shooting at lower magnification to increase Depth-Of-Field (DOF), then cropping to full, or near-full frame. The main objective of this group is post true macro images, as close to life-size or 1:1 mag as possible.

Other considerations for good macro-photography are listed here, each as important as another:

Proper exposure: no blown-out highlights & no blocked-up shadows.
Subject in focus, especially insect eyes, which are always the focal point of anyone viewing an insect image.
Optimum DOF to hold subject: the smaller the aperture, the greater the DOF.
Proper resolution: over-cropping will enlarge subject, but will deteriorate the image quality.
Strong composition: as with any photograph, optimal subject placement, color separation, and focal separation from background, make a superior image.

As stated earlier, the main goal of MACRO-LIFE group is to provide a forum for macro-photographers to post their true macrography. It is also our goal to provide encouragement to novice & intermediate photographers to attain excellence in macro-photography. This will be achieved by attaching comments & suggestions to submitted photographs that do not meet true macro-photography criteria. Such constructive criticism will be concise & to the point, but not mean or off-topic.

Feel free to directly ask ADMINs or MODs questions pertinent to macro-photography. Members may also start a Discussion to ask questions to the membership. Happy shooting!
