Round 2 Guidelines

Hi Everyone!

First I just wanted to say that I am so excited to host the next round of the Vintage Sheet Swap. I've spoken with Elizabeth of Oh, Fransson! and she was generous enough to offer me many tips. Along with those and some of my own thoughts, these will be the guidelines for the second round. If you feel that you cannot meet these or will be unable to make the mailing deadline, PLEASE do not join. This will just delay the fun for everyone else. Here are the guidelines:

I am sorry to do this, but I will have to limit this to domestic swappers only. I MAY consider Canadian swappers, but PLEASE contact me first.

1.Mailing will ONLY be done via flat rate envelopes or flat rate boxes. It is the easiest way to ship & keep track of so many packages. Payment should be made to me via paypal so that I can easily print shipping labels. I am requesting you add paypal fees into the shipping rate. FRE will be $5.05 and FRB will be $11.

2.You can choose how many fat quarters you wish to send & therefore receive. Elizabeth seems to remember that it was about 16 fat quarters that could fit into a FRE and about 80 that fit into a FRB. If you want to send less than either, that it is fine too.

3.As far as the quality of the sheets themselves, please only send what you would like to receive . Try to stick to cotton or cotton blends. Please do not send anything that is overly 80s, have cartoon characters, etc. Also, avoid sending solids, neutrals, or brown prints. These seem to have been the least popular in the last swap. If you cannot find sheets locally, consider buying some on etsy or ebay. There are plenty out there. It is ok for you to send several fat quarters from the sheet. Bottom line: if you wouldn't want to get it, don't send it.

4.Please, please wash the sheets prior to sending them. It will be really helpful in getting the fat quarters back to you quickly.

5.I am also asking for $2 fee per swapper in addition to the shipping fee. This is to offset the cost of printing, tape, ink, etc. It may seem like these minor things would not cost a lot, but multiply that times however many swappers and it becomes quite an expense. Please contact me if this is a problem for you.

6.If you send sheets that I deem to be “unacceptable” (for lack of a better word), as in, one that has stains or tears, I will not give you a swapped fat quarter. Instead I will send back your fat quarter to you. This may sound harsh, but this is unfair to the swappers who spent time inspecting their sheets and sent nice ones.

7.I will try accommodate requests for colors/types of sheets, but I cannot make any promises or reserve any of the fabrics. This is yet another reason why it is important you send fabrics you'd like to receive. If everyone sends good sheets, you all get nice sheets in return!

8.Please keep in mind that although I am stating the importance of sending quality fabrics (nice prints & cotton/cotton blends), I cannot guarantee that you will receive all of the same quality back. I am not saying that you will receive all polyester back, but please don't be surprised/upset if you get a few back. I will do my best to inspect all the sheets that come in to avoid this problem.

9.PLEASE, please ship your fat quarters to me by the deadline. If you are late you delay the swap for everyone. The sooner I get the fabrics, the faster I can get them out. Of course things do come up, so if there is a problem with can deal with it then.

sounds great! I will get my e-mail off to you. When do you did the money paid to paypal? Before we sign up or just before we mail the fat quarters? Also can you clarify "not 80's" sheets? I thought that vintage meant that the sheets would be older not recent prints. I recently got some sheets from my husbands mother's estate that are all 70's and 80's, some really great prints. Does this mean you wouldn't want these and would prefer newer? I don't want to share these if they are not wanted. Can look at thrift shops if you prefer newer. thanks!

Hi! Great questions-

I will ask for the paypal to be paid when you send off your package to me. That would probably be the best.

By 80's I mean things that have "bold" prints (lines, squares), or have some type of licensed characters, or cartoons, things that look "modern." I hope that makes sense.

I don't mean to sound like any from the 80's would be bad, but base it on the print itself. If they are from the 80's but have nice prints, then they'll be acceptable. Most people generally like the floral type prints, this photo shows sheets that would be good, of course there are others too www.flickr.com/photos/24001748@N06/2699011945/in/pool-792...

Just use your best judgment. Like I said before, send what you'd like to receive.

Hope that is helpful!

I am assuming that you want us to stay away from some of the 80's colors then like yellow, orange and browns. Will do! Too bad have some great orange and yellow sheets! If anyone is interested in trading some of those colors let me know!

Yeah, it's not that I'm saying definitely don't send them, but Elizabeth told me that last round a bunch of people sent those type of colors, but no one really wanted to receive those ones, so I'm just trying to avoid that. If others want those colors, then by all means send them!

also, I don't mean that they all have to be floral. stripes, etc, are fine too.

Oh, Fransson!  Pro User  says:

I should probably clarify that by brown and neutral prints, I meant prints that were almost entirely brown and/or neutral, not bright 70's color schemes like orange/yellow/green. Like nanotchka said, there are lots of great sheets available in yellow/green/orange and sheets in those colors were popular in the first swap.

Quick couple of questions.

I have to ask for clarification. Are we sending pre cut FQ's or sheets?
If FQ's do you want them all to be a standardized size like 18"x22"?

How many FQ can you get from standard sheet sizes? I don't have any sheets, and I would like a rough idea of how many to aim for.

Is the mailing deadline the date to ship by or the date that you need to receive the packages by?

Thank you!

katiejeanbags is a group administrator katiejeanbags  Pro User  says:

Yes, use the standard FQ size is 18"x 22" .

The # of FQs you will get out of a sheet will depend on which size sheet you get. Out of a Full size you'll probably get about 9, out of a king or a queen you'll probably get at least 12. Also check out pillow cases because some of the larger ones you can get 2 out of and they are generally a lot cheaper than sheets.

The mailing deadline will be the deadline you should send the packages to me. However, feel free to send them earlier. The sooner I get packages back, the sooner I can get the sheet back to you guys

Hope that answers everything.

I just found this swap and have a few questions. I'm super excited about the prospects because it's hard for me to find cute vintage sheets and I have so many projects I want to make with them!

So here goes - Can I send 5 fat quarters from the same sheet? If I did, would I get a mixture of sheets back from you? Are sheets with printed designs acceptable? Thanks!

katiejeanbags is a group administrator katiejeanbags  Pro User  says:

yes, you can send several of the same print and get different prints back. I'm not really sure what you mean by printed, but as long as it is vintage, a cotton or cotton blend, and looks nice, i'm sure it'll be fine.

If you mean prints versus solids, I think that the prints are what people are looking for rather than just solid color sheets. Am I right Katie?

yes, we want to try to avoid solid. you can send things with nice stripes, dots, etc., but solids are not that desirable.

I'm confused on the cost.

Is it $11 plus pay pal fees for the flat rate box? Or does the $11 include the fees?
Posted 26 months ago. (permalink)

katiejeanbags is a group administrator katiejeanbags  Pro User  says:

$11 including shipping and paypal fees, there is an extra $2 fee for extra costs for ink, tape, paper, etc. Hope that clarifies it.

I had two points to add:

1. It seems to me that if a full flat sheet is 81X96, you should be able to get 16 FQs out of it if you lay them out in the most efficient way since 18*4=72 and 22*4=88, and that leaves you 8 or 9 inches left over on each side in case you have to cut off the hems and the top part. If you lay them out the opposite way, you would still get 15 FQs (3 by 5). For a twin flat sheet (66x96), you could get 15 if there is no waste (since 22*3=66) or 13 if you can't/don't want to unpick the hems. I laid these out in Illustrator so I think these figures are right, unless maybe there's something I didn't think of... Just thought this might be useful for people trying to figure out how many sheets they need to buy.

2. I was just wondering if we should label our FQs in some way or if you have some ingenious plan for making sure someone doesn't get a bunch of their own back?

I plan on taking pictures of each person's sent FQ so I can remember who sent what. Hopefully that will avoid getting your own back.

i added a tag to each of my fat quarters. 1. so the person knows who it came from, and 2. so i don't accidentally get mine back. and 3. cause they're cute and i wanted tomake some cute tags, lol.

OK, queensonia2001, that is hands-down the most clever and sweet idea! What did you make the tags out of and how did you attach them?

ItsQuietNow says:

I tied some of the scraps from the sheets around each fat quarter and slipped a little card in each one. (Hope that's okay)

ItsQuietNow, yes, so clever! Glad I haven't packed mine up yet - if I can squeeze a few more minutes out of my days this week maybe I can do the same thing. Too bad I tossed a bunch of really skinny scraps last weekend :(- I'm a terrible pack-rat who is trying to break the habit... Oh well, there are plenty of odds and ends left in my bin!
