What is ParkPalooza?
ParkPalooza is a two-day interactive annual event hosted by the National Park Service/Jefferson National Expansion Memorial and supported by Jefferson National Parks Association. Our first event was held in St. Louis this year on the grounds of the Gateway Arch on Saturday, September 27 and Sunday, September 28, 2008 from 10:00 to 4:00.
In a festival environment, more than 15,000 - families and children were introduced to the fun, recreational and educational experiences you can have in parks across the country.
Some of the featured experiences include:
• Rock climbing
• Reel casting, fly fishing
• Boat simulator
• Nature walks
• Orienteering & geo-caching
• Biking
• Simulated archeology dig
• Setting up campsites and learning how to pack a backpack
• Historic character portrayals
• Art, music and dance
• Hands-on craft activities
• Living history demonstrations
...and there were many more!
Who We Are
ParkPalooza at the Gateway Arch 2008 is a flickr photogroup sponsored by Jefferson National Parks Association, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in St Louis and dedicated to enriching public understanding and appreciation of America's national parks, public lands and historic places.
Photo Contests: Enter Or Be A Judge!
Parks offer tremendous ecological diversity, history, and natural beauty as well as the opportunity for a variety of recreational activity. As a way of honoring special places and special times in parks, Jefferson National Parks Association will be sponsoring two photo contests. We thought this would be a great way to share and let others know about the many sights to see, places to visit and things to do in parks. We hope to engage those who attend ParkPalooza, those who are active in parks and those active on Flickr™.
Both contests will be featured here on Flickr™. You can join our ParkPalooza group and either enter the contest or you can join our group and participate as a judge.

Experience Your Parks Photo Contest:
Now that ParkPalooza Photo Contest has ended we have launched the Experience Your Parks Photo Contest. Anywhere in America, throughout the year you can enjoy visits to parks where you can have experiences from rock climbing to cultural dance. We would like you to share your images and stories of your visits to parks beginning on December 1, 2008. Once again on Flickr™ in the ParkPalooza Group you can upload your photos of park experiences. We hope this Flickr™ ParkPalooza Group will allow you to interact with others and share your images, stories, and connections to the parks you visit and the experiences you have in them.
Each month you can upload photos of your park experiences from December 2008 through August 2009.
How Do I Join?
It's easy. If you are already a member of Flickr™ join our ParkPalooza Group to submit photos for the contest or to participate as a judge. If you haven't used Flickr™ before then click on the link in the footer menu to create your free account.
How Do I Enter the Contest
You can enter the contest on Flickr™ by uploading your photo to the ParkPalooza Group for the month of your park experience. Each submission must have a description which includes 1) what inspired you to visit a park and 3) name of the park where the image was taken.
What to Enter
We are looking for quality images that capture park experiences across America from December 1, 2008 through August 25, 2009. Any image that captures a landscape or an up-close and personal shot of park scenery, nature, history or people enjoying the recreational and cultural activities in parks may be submitted.
As a guide for locations to take your pictures in, we encourage you to check out nps.gov for a listing of national parks across the country. State parks are usually listed on a park locator site by state.
Contest Opening and Closing Dates
The Experience Your Parks Photo Contest opening date for submissions will begin on December 1, 2008 at 12:00 midnight Central Time. The deadline for submitting your images for December will be December 26, 2008 at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.

Jefferson National Parks Association reserves the right to adjust any deadline dates as the result of causes beyond its immediate control.
Details, Conditions and Important Stuff
Please read the conditions and rules for entering the Experience Your Parks Photo Contest 2008/2009. Please read all sections before submitting your photos. By participating in the contest you indicate that you have read and agree with terms, conditions, and rules. Winners will be determined by public vote on the Flickr™ ParkPalooza Group after closing of submissions. If you have any questions, feel free to email us at riley@jnpa.com.
Image Requirements
All images should accurately depict the subject matter as it appeared.
Images submitted must be images with subject matter and content that accurately reflects the above contest descriptions.
Images entered should have a native resolution of at least 5 megapixels or greater.
Images must include a title and the descriptions as noted above.
Images submitted for the Experience Your Parks Photo Contest must be images taken at parks across America.
Judging
Images entered into the Experience Your Park Photo Contest will be judged on subject matter, composition, technical excellence, visual impact, and originality. The judges will be Flickr™ users who will determine the "People's Choice" for 1st Place each month. Each month judges will enter "winner" in the comment section for the photos that they deem as a winner. Judging will take place each month at the close of submissions and through the last day of each month at 11:59 p.m. Central Time.
Jefferson National Parks Association encourages honesty and accountability on judging. If cheating is detected the images associated will be disqualified from the contest. Jefferson National Parks Association also reserves the right to deny any image submitted to the pool that it deems inappropriate. Any decision made by judges are final.
Winners
One winner will be selected for the Experience Your Parks Photo Contest each month through public voting, which will take place on Flickr™. The photos submitted with the most "winners" in their comments will be awarded 1st place each month from December 2008 through August 2009.
Once we tally up the votes, we'll announce the monthly winners on the Flickr™ ParkPalooza Group page and on jnpa.com at groups.parkpalooza.org.
Last but not least, we are including a "People's Choice" for the overall winning image from the 9 months. The "People's Choice" judging for the best overall winner of the Experience Your Parks Photo Contest will be done September 1 through September 10, 2009.

Photographer's Rights
The photographer shall retain ownership and rights to all images submitted to both Photo Contests other than the rights licensed in the next sentence. By entering this contest, you agree to hereby grant Jefferson National Parks Association (i) a nonexclusive, worldwide, irrevocable, royalty-free license to reproduce, distribute, publicly display and publicly perform the photographs you submit to Jefferson National Parks Association, and (ii) the right to use your name, city, state and country of residence in promotions and other publications.
Legal Conditions
By entering this contest, you indicate you agree to abide by the following legal conditions:
You agree that, regardless of the ParkPalooza or Experience Your Parks Photo Contests outcome, you will not challenge the results of the contest or file any claims or suits in connection with the contest against Jefferson National Parks Association (JNPA), its employees, or any of its affiliates. JNPA may, at its sole discretion, terminate or modify the ParkPalooza and/or Experience Your Parks Photo Contests and disclaims any liability to any entrant that may arise.
You agree that the images you submit may be used by JNPA in printed ephemera, on a web site, in a slideshow and screensaver, or any other media, and may be copied and displayed in any country provided that JNPA affords the appropriate attribution to you as the photographer. You may not revoke these terms and conditions to allow JNPA to use any photo you submit to these photo contests. While JNPA may use your images, you will still remain the sole owner of all photographic images submitted to the ParkPalooza and/or Experience Your Parks Photo Contests. Images submitted will not be reproduced for any commercial products for resale without additional negotiation with and approval by the photographer.
You agree that JNPA is not responsible for any incorrect or inaccurate information by any technical or human error that may occur in the processing of submissions to the photo competition or in the use of such images in future print or electronic materials, including but not limited to any misprints or typographical errors.
You affirm and ensure JNPA that the photographs you submit are a) your own work, and b) do not (to the best of your knowledge) infringe on the rights of any other person or business.
You affirm and ensure JNPA that any recognizable person(s) depicted in your photographs have given you permission for the use of their image(s) in your photographs. JNPA may ask for proof of permission or copies of signed releases upon request.
