About 道の駅 (Michi-no-eki)

"Michi-no-eki" in Japan, are locations which is generally served along popular streets and purposed for parking area, souvenir shops and restrooms for travelers. In Japan, lands are usually expensive even in rural areas, so micho-no-eki are quite convenient facilities for drivers. In addition, enough rest while long distance driving is essential but, we used to be difficult to find appropriate location for safe and not-expensive parking in former times. Currently more than 800 michi-no-eki are served in Japan nationwide.
In contrast to michi-no-eki, service areas and parking areas are operated for expressways, but expressways are basically toll-road in Japan, so they are dedicated for toll road users.
