I find the best thing to do to find new places is get a daysaver on the bus - explore the north side and along the coast - from Crammond to Portabello. Many industrial and urban sites.

There's a great place at the bottom of Leith walk. When you get to the bottom of the walk, take a right at the lights and head along the main road out to porty (the ones that ends up going past the sewage works). There's a huge old tennament that they've demolished but left the front fascade. If only I can find a way inside the fence :)

there are some interesting spots along the canal by fountainbridge.
all along the coast is good too i agree, very gritty and industrial.
also the holyrood/abbeyhill area has some exciting looking abandonded buildings which may or may not be accessible, i plan to check them out soon.

I have terrible memories of Cramond. When I was 8 my dad took me and my friend across to Cramond island (for my Brownie rambler's badge, would you believe) I didn't want to go across the causeway cause I'm scared of water. He said it would be find. Once we were on the island the tide started coming in. My dad didn;t want us to get stranded (this was in the days before mobile phones) so he dragged us back across the causeway which was halfway under water by then. He was feeling for the causeway with his feet, and dragging a kid along each side of him up to the waist in water. Several yards from the shore and safety there was a dry patch, and he let go and told us to wait there. Then he ran ahead and took a photo of us!!! We were all ok and safe in the end, but I've never been so scared in my life. I still have the old photo somewhere to remind me of this adventure for ever!
But that aside, I can confirm it's a very pretty place for photos (just don't take any pictures on a flooded causeway!)

I discovered a little alleyway (in my wee photo I submitted!) in Morningside, which is designed like a scene out of the Wild West. Well worth a visit with a camera, and if you have the inclination, a bit of fancy dress and some friends for making your own wee mini photo story!

Have a walk down the Water of Leith too. OK its not very 'gritty', but its a world away from Princes St.

Just returned from Lauriston Castle (near Cramond) and discovered they have a beautiful little Japanese garden there, with waterfalls, plants all trimmed, bamboo, and "stuff". Very cool, and a little bit different!

Royston/ Wardieburn, Pilton. It's earily quiet for such a built up area.

I had an office in Gracemount community centre for a few years - you get to it up a wee road off Lasswade Road, opposite the Northfield Hotel. The building itself - the "Mansion" as it's called - has some beautiful features, but if you can catch Max the manager at the centre he might let you into the adjacent walled garden for a poke about.

Does it have to be gritty? There's also the bike path network and the Water of Leith Walkway, and the canal, all of which are completely different worlds from the streets of Edinburgh.

And don't forget Arthur's Seat!

But if you really want gritty, just follow the shores of the Firth of Forth.

Lots of great cemeteries with wonderful old graves, try greyfriars kirkyard or St Cuthberts at the bottom of Lothian Road or Corstorphine old Parich church

down in leith, there's a little road that goes down beside the sewage works, with some good stuff down there, if you can stand the smell when going past the sewage works (yay for no sense of smell!), and there is a load of little rented plots of land along a dirt track as well as railway sidings, some visible ex-ports land and a few other bits and bobs.

s Jamie.184 said there are some great cemeteries, i took a few shots around one between Dalry & Gorgie today (uploaded a few), but i can't really do it justice. Someone with more talent and a better camera could get some great shots in there, there are lots of trees so there are great shadows when the sun is low, unfortunately alot of the headstones have been vandalised and knocked down :(

mmmm - just seen the building I live in described as "gritty" LOL It looks very different from the pier with the sun on it. If you want really gritty go shoot some pictures up on the scheme in Granton or Pilton. If you just wander the backstreets of Edinburgh virtually anywhere, you'll find something worth shooting. There are plenty of hidden corners - just go out and explore. That's why we have feet

I went to Port Edgar on Saturday, OK it's in S Queensferry (only 15mins from Corstorphine) so I don't know if this is classed as Edinburgh. Lot's of really nice gritty photo opportunities and as far from the castle/royal mile as you will get.

Just been all the way along the stones at the waters edge at platinum point this evening, all the way along to the mouth of Leith docks and by the old derelict lighthouse, unfortunately my camera's broken at the moment, but i'll get some photos soon.

Heh Spoons if that was you with your pal on the bicycles, I was the guy with the dog who said he was coming back to the lighthouse with a camera. Managed it today in the rain and got some pics (some with spots of rain) but will go again in better weather. Pictures uploading to Flickr as I type this. It is definitely worth the walk but be careful where the path ends if the rocks are wet, they are very slippy and we passed the camera over the fence to avoid risking damage.

Cammo House and Tower are very photogenic: there's ruins, avenues of trees, ponds, a mysterious walled garden and spooky woods.

A few suggestions - find the bronze plaques in the pavement which are there mainly for tourists - they're very small but there's one on North Bridge and one behind the bus stop at the entrance to the Waverley Market. Cammo Estate is interesting, out Barnton way as is Warriston Cemetry.

A few weeks back i walked back from Crammond up river and came across the old bridge that spans the river. I tried to get down to river level beside the bridge but bottled it at one side and got barbed wire in my leg on the other. Will try again when i've built up the guts but if anyone wants to try their hand then go for it - it looks like it'll produce some nice pix.
Might have to wait for the rain going off though.

The Cammo estate is indeed brilliant and very sppoky. The Stables and the Canal are just weird.
The Union Canal behind FountainBridge is also very interesting.
There are also some interesting Urban/architecture pictures to be taken in Edinburgh Pack/South Gyle.
