About My Girlfriend is a Katie
The College of Saint Catherine has long been a prominent fixture of Saint Paul. For over 100 years it has been a leader in higher education for women from around the world.
According to the CSC website, the college promotes the following values in a liberal arts education:
Ethics and Social Justice
The ability to apply ethical standards to judge individuals and collective actions; the development of attitudes and behaviors that reflect integrity, honesty, compassion and justice in one's personal and professional life.
Diversity and Global Perspectives
The ability to understand and analyze the impact of diversity and systems of power and privilege on the individual and society; the ability to decipher and honor multiple and global perspectives in creating mutual understanding; the ability to imagine and take action towards justice.
Critical and Creative Inquiry
The ability to gather, analyze and critically evaluate information to develop reasonable arguments, sound judgments and effective solutions. This ability is founded on a broad knowledge of the achievements of human creativity and the variety of disciplinary approaches for exploring truths.
Though the college preaches loudly and widely about social justice, their stance on homosexuality is less than favorable. In the very recent past, the College of Saint Catherine has clearly demonstrated that they, as an institution, are moving in the opposite direction as the direction in which they are encouraging their students to journey in.
---------
I have created this group as a means of dealing with the blatant disrespect for the sexual orientation of many of the students, faculty and staff of the College of Saint Catherine. In the short time that I have spent here at St. Kate's, I have been thoroughly disappointed with their consistent pushing of the concept of social justice to all the students of the college while their actions as an institution seem to imply that they have a selective definition of the term "social justice."
As you may or may not know, the college bookstore sells a t-shirt that says "My Girlfriend is a Katie." I had the idea to do a series of photographs featuring women wearing the shirt. I am creating this group to encourage the awareness of this issue of discrimination through art and through a t-shirt.
You don't have to be gay or bisexual. You don't have to be a Katie. If you or someone you know has a "My Girlfriend is a Katie" t-shirt and you're a woman who feels strongly about the true meaning of social justice and absolute equality, you're the perfect person for this group.
