Civil Rights For People Of All Abilities
"Let us not therefore judge one another any more; but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling block or an occasion to fall in his brother's way." [Romans 14:13]
OK, for the purpose of this group access shots must demonstrate in some meaningful way how a person with a disibility has been provided access to his or her community, or been denied access to his or her community. This group is about recognizing BARRIERS and illustrating how barriers "handicap" those with disabilities, and those who would like to acompiany those with disabilities to enjoy all the benifits of their community.
Obvious examples would be guide dogs, wheelchair ramps, and special signals for the hearing impaired. Other examples that are more challenging to illustrate would deal with "hidden" and "invisible" disabilities, and include subjects like the Special Olympics, and the inclusion of persons with developmental, mental, and cognative disabilities.
Look at it this way, what challenges would you face, if you had a birthday party for your 10 year old, and invited his friend who had a disability to come along to the party, trip or outing?
As the new civil rights laws begin to take effect world wide, we all need to be more aware of how the world looks to others. For example, we would all be handicapped if we lived in a high rise apartment building that did not have stairs or elevators, and we were required to "fly up" to our apartment!
