Hey guys, for this contest a Beginner has more to do with your own perception of your sewing skills. I am imaging the Non Beginners to be people who have been sewing for a while, and already have a consistant personal style and art vision.
Yes, in the contemporary category all work must be artist designed.
That doesn't mean you can't get inspiration from other peoples work. It's just that the design should not be a copy. It should be your own personal statement.

Hi darlly, so glad that you are going to give the contest a try. I just wanted to remind you that you must declare a category. As for Themes, you don't need to declare until you add the image to the Stitched by Hand, Old School Sewing competition group.

just a question about this guideline...
4. The work presented must be a finished piece that is not meant to be added or attached to a large piece.
is it ok if there are smaller bits attached to it though? as in, the finished piece is, well, the piece & other bits are attached to it. if i'm amking any sense?

Small bits of almost anything you like may be added to your piece. I didn't want hand sewn sections of a piece that is actually made to be pieced into a machine sewn item entered in this contest.
All submitted pieces must be complete and 100% hand sewn.

Badbird,
I would love to submit for this competition a 2D, my design, contempary, (original art?). I want to design it as I stitch. Do I have to choose from one of the above themes. I would love to do a contempory design based on line and square on hand painted canvas (some of the canvas will be exposed). I would love to paint the canvas a sponged blue and use various threads with an autum leaf color theme with some punch of color. If this idea isn't acceptable for this composition please let me know. I can think of something else.

I love your idea! When I started thinking about this contest I had several people request themes. So. I went with themes. You have to choose one of the themes. Sorry! Also, the painted canvas is ok if kept minimal. It is ok if you are just creating a colored background, much like the color from commerial fabric., but the design elements and construction should be with the needle and thread.

category 2 2D Traditional, work must be related to or copy traditional / historic work. This work may be purchased design, public domain images or copy of historic work.
my subject matter will fall under both the folk art and my My Heritage themes

i_am_craftylittlemonkey, It sounds like your choice will either be 2D Contemporary, Original art or 3D sculptureal fiber. I know it's hard to fiddle with your creative flow. It's just that when I annouced that I was thinking of this competition people kept suggesting I have catagories and themes, so I went for it.
I wish I had a answer for you. If it helps, it would be nice to have a few more people in the 3D catagory.
