About Hawaiian Native Biota
Aloha kākou!
The Hawaiian islands have more endangered species per squire mile than any other place on earth. The bulk of these species are unprotected from a myriad of threats, namely the ruthless onslaught of introduced invasive species and development.
We welcome your photos of endemic and native species of the Hawaiian archipelago, from your greenhouse, your garden, found growing in nature, or in a botanical institution. Because of the special focus of this group, we choose not to show photos of non-native species.
This group serves as a showcase for your photos and as a research tool for the study Hawai'i flora and fauna. With that in mind, please make sure all of your photos are identified at least to genus. If you are unsure as to an organism's specific identification, please start a thread in the discussion area, and we'll all try to find an ID for you.
Our objective is to spread awareness, inspire activism in protecting these species, and to get home gardeners and professional landscapers interested in using native Hawaiian plant species in their projects.
We'd love to see pictures of plants, flowers, trees, fungi, lichen, algae, snails, birds and bats.
