About Lyme Regis and Charmouth
The small south coast town of Lyme Regis in Dorset, England which is famous for the carpet of fossils on the beaches, and its harbour called The Cobb.
The town suffered a siege during the English Civil War and the Duke of Monmouth landed on Monmouth Beach prior to being defeated at the Battle of Sedgemoor in 1685.
Jane Austen visited Lyme Regis and found inspiration for her novels while Victorian girl Mary Anning found many of the world's first identified fossils in the local cliffs including the first Pterodactyl, the first Icthyosaur and the first Plesiosaur. Many of her finds are now on display in the Natural History Museum, South Kensington.
