How to participate in 700 things

Welcome aboard, all. This is a little post to try to clear up confusion over how to participate.

We at 700 things are not big into explanation, but here goes:

Optimally, you join the flickr group (A), then pick a name from the list (B)[note that all of the finished lists are posted as locked discussion threads in this group], then draw it and upload it (C), then title (D) your drawing as follows:

Number period name

ie. "658. Total"

Plus you add machine tags as follows:

sevenhundred:group=unicorns
sevenhundred:number=301

Where "unicorns" is the name of the group. And the number "301" is replaced by the appropriate number from the list. (E).

In my example, below the machine tags are:

sevenhundred:group=underwear
sevenhundred:number=658

By doing this, you allow Dan Coulter's bots to keep track of what has been drawn and add it to our master site, which is still in development.

Then (F) add to the appropriate group as well as the 700things group.

Does that make sense? Click on this pic to see an example of how we do it (though the machine tags will not be visible):

658. Total

Excelsior!

[Edited by Dan to use the new machine tags]

Hello.

All of this is amazing, and I applaud you from my computer, far away.

I have written Dan and Ape-Lad separately, but I am writing now to ask, humbly, that you please not do a list of 700 mole-man names.

If you do, a tremendous amount of work for my next book will have been wasted.

I hope you understand.

And I thank you all.

That is all.

Dear John,

None of this would have happened without you. We are at your mercy to command. The 700 molemen shall remain your exclusive ykleptory domain, as will the hoboes, of course, and any others you want to put dibs on.

Eagerly awaiting the furtherment of Complete Knowledge.

Understood. Premature Mole-Man illustrations will not be attempted or tolerated until such time as the true master list of them is revealed to the nation.
Thank you.

I think we included that list because some of us knew it was coming so we wanted a placeholder, but we would in no way entertain even the thought of filling it full of names. We know where our butter is breaded.

Have no fear.

I concur. I have no intentions of drawing any mole-men until the list by the grandmaster of 700 lists has been completed and revealed to the nation in all it's glory. No worries sir..I think we can fill our need for drawing things from the other 699 other lists already compiled. :)

So, are all you hobo artists going to do this on your existing hoboes?

I am very excited about this project, I was just thinking I needed to draw more bunnies and pirates. Just one q, how are the 700 categories going to be determined? Is there any cap on how many I can do? I got itchy fingers.

klwarner: Ape Lad single-handedly illustrated all 800 of the 700 hoboes. Feel free to illustrate as many as you like in any of the groups we've setup. Duplicates are welcome and desired.

Xadrian--
I was going to ask Dan about the hoboes. If we go back and tag all of them there will be a ginormous flood. I think I'll hold off.
KL--
The list of 700 things was finalized a couple of days ago and is currently in clean up mode. The final list will be posted as a new thread. I think the general idea for the "700 Things" list is to do a few representative illustrations from any (or all) of the lists (except Mole-Men), unless we really want to start a group for one of them and begin naming 700 of them. But I kind of think we have enough names on the burner for now. You can still add names to the Pirates, Bunnies, Unicorns, and Robots list.
Also, there is no cap aside from the Mole Man Moratorium.

...and to reiterate what Dan wrote as I was writing what I just wrote: duplicates are awesome. Don't think that just because someone else has drawn something that your interpretation is off limits.
At some point we should start to do drawing challenges where whoever wants to draws the same name.

What I'd kind of like to see for the list of 700 lists of 700 things would be for people to do one illustration per list with several representative items from that list with a made up name and number. Perhaps a Nick Nolte from each group. I think that many of the ideas listed would not be viable as full lists of 700 things, but are funny to think of what kind of crazy person would try to come up with 700 names for the list.

Once I clean it up, I'll strike Mole-men from the list and leave it with 699 items (or should I leave it at 698 for his third book?).

The list should also not restrict us from coming up with an awesome idea for a group down the road and adding it to the project.

Oh, Ape Lad, I plan to write a script that will go back and tag all of the hoboes appropriately.

Though it may be antithetical to the spirit of the listing, I'd favor some pruning of the list of 700 lists.

First there's the duplicates (several) and near-duplicates (lots). Then, there's a bunch that, as Dan points out, just aren't viable. And what bothers me there is not that we couldn't fill them up, but that they wouldn't be funny.

I plan on trying to clear out any duplicates out of the list when I get a chance. I don't see this list as being the list of groups we'll start. I see it more of a list of things that the concept of 700 names in that category is funny. Basically, if you can draw a Nick Nolte as a member of the list, it's ok by me.

How do the rest of you guys feel about the list as it stands (sans duplicates, of course)?

I think there are indeed a lot that are unfunnily similar to each other. And some that just don't seem interesting in concept. I don't plan on quantifying this, though.

I like the list fine. Some are funnier than others, sure, but I think we can just delete the dupes and call it a go. Some are also pretty undrawable and unlistable, but that's okay too. I don't in any stretch foresee 700 different groups with 700 drawings. That equals.... hold on.... 490,000 drawings!!!
I see the 700 things list as purely conceptual unless people want to pick 2 or 3 and give them sample names, like Dan says. Like if I want to draw a few amorphous I'll just throw in a couple.

Agreed, although I don't plan on doing anything major for the next (5, 8, carry the two) 7,000 years that it'd take me to do this, but I'm all for a few representative images per group.

We need to make sure people are doing the machine tags right, is it sevenhundred or 700?

Also, as soon as Robots are done I'm starting up Mobsters.

I agree with Wasser. I think the list of lists should be funny.

Secondly, not that we would ever draw every name from every list, but that we should want to.

I would be in favor of eliminating the duplicates, the unlistable and undrawable, and then seeing where we are. Maybe at that point we eliminate the consensus-unfunny ones and fill it back up.

I also think we should bump the ACTIVE lists to the top of the list of lists.

What say?

xadrian is a group administrator xadrian  Pro User  says:

I've pulled them all and renumbered them and we're at 729 without having gone looking for duplicates.

And you're right, there's a lot of near duplicates (Aliens and Stark Trek Aliens, Web Comics and Failed Web Comics, etc) that it's going to take some executive decision making to get them pruned down. I'd be in favor of eliminating the overly descriptive ones. Example would be just to do Aliens. You're going to be hard pressed to find 700 without limiting it to Star Trek or Kirk Hos or something.

I think the spirit of the lists were to have 700 things to draw, not just 700 things. Some of these are damn near esoteric. (700 Catchphrases?) I don't want to nix creativity per se, but I'm not sure about some of these. My concern is we'll end up getting rid of half of them if we're uber-strict about it.

And yes I think we should move all the current groups to the top.

I agree with moving the active lists up to the top. For stability (especially with the items where the list number is a joke) we might want to just move the list up without changing the order...

I personally would enjoy populating and drawing a list of 700 catchphrases. Ditto for political strategems... This is the kind of project that wikis were made to handle....

artandstory says:

Instead of narrowing duplicates down to one all-encompassing category, I think it might be interesting to see more duplicates. Perhaps a list of "700 700 Things Variants," which would, of course, be a collection of 700 variant categories. For example, the first item in 700 700 Things Variants might be, "1. 700 Star Trek Variants," which would reference a list of 700 Star Trek Variants, which might begin, "1. 700 Kirk Hos, 2. 700 Spandex Malfunctions, 3. 700 Unintelligible Intelligent Lifeforms," and so on. Then each of these items from the 700 Star Trek Variants list would reference their corresponding 700 group where, in the case of Star Trek Variant #1, we would post 700 Kirk Ho names and illustrations.

i used to draw says:

i find this a little confusing (but i am bad at reading instructions) but i'm anxious to draw. do you have to submit a name to the 700 lists while they're still in progress or can you add to any by picking a name you like and illustrating it.

mattharvest  Pro User  says:

Just pick any name that is in one of the lists and draw it.

Then, label your drawing "#. " where # is the number, and is the name (shocking, I know).

Next, send the drawing to the appropriate group, plus the 700 Things group.

Finally, make sure to add the machine tags to the image, as described.

Pick any name and draw it, even if you didn't participate in making the list. If there are still lists under construction, feel free to add to them, and draw from them.
If, however, you are drawing from a list that is still under construction, keep in mind that there will likely be editing and/or renumbering at some point.
The important point is to go ahead and draw.
