22 Oct 11 - Thanks for your support of the pool. Particular thanks to Chalkstream for finding the Sidney Herbert statue in Salisbury, and saintange for the photos of the funerary monument of la comtesse de Lariboisière, in Paris, and angels in London and Turkey. There are several works in France missing from the pool, including La Tour d'Auvergne (Carhaix), and le duc d’Orléans (Château d'Eu). Relief panels on statue plinths are often overlooked.

About Carlo Marochetti, Sculptor

A group for sculpture by Carlo (Charles) Marochetti (the surname sometimes appears as Marocchetti, although this does not seem to be the family's spelling). It is difficult to believe that the same sculptor could have worked on such iconic structures as the lions of Trafalgar Square in London, the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, and the triumphal equestrian statues in Turin.

Baron Carlo Marochetti of Vaux (1805-1867) was born in Turin, Italy, but later the family moved to Paris, France. He studied under Baron François Bosio, and exhibited at the Salon of 1827. For more information on his early career, see Biographical sketch. Marochetti fled to Britain in 1848, and it is in Britain that much of his subsequent work is to be found, The sculptors who studied under him include John Mossman (1817-90) and his brother William Mossman Junior (1824-84) from Glasgow.
