My friend who is an Engineer for the Stone Mountain Railroad says the trains are not running at this time and probably will not be running in February. That means no free ride from the west parking lot to the main parking lot. It also means that he doesn't have any complimentary tickets for the lift. Sorry!

@ You are absolutely right. An empty sky is a boring sky. There needs to be some clouds there to catch and create highlights.
Here's today's forecast
Thu Feb 19 Few Showers 49°/33° 30 %
The detail show "Few Showers" during the day and "Clear" at night. That might give us a perfect sky. I remember last February's stroll. The forecast said the same thing but it never came to be. We had heavy overcast the entire day. Will see this year.

Would sure be ideal if we got storm clouds just breaking up and blowing away like there were last night. I was on the interstate (20 westbound toward Douglasville) and the light was mostly gone by the time I was done driving. Did anybody catch it? Gorgeous flame-orange rim lighting on huge fluffy stacks of cloud.

Sunday morning's long range forecast for Thursday remains unchanged.
Thu Feb 19 Partly Cloudy 50°/28° 10 %
"Partly Cloudy" can encompass a wide range of "Partly" but the night forecast of "Clear" and the low probability of rain, 10%, may give us a good photo opportunity.

How much is it to get in -- just buy a parking pass for about $8.00? or is admission separate from the parking pass, and is it per person -- I can't tell!
Then, is there a good meeting spot and time to gather?
Are most folks planning to hike up and down or ride the cable car up ($9.00) and hike down in the dark? From the scattery info on their site, it looks like the 'Attraction' the SkyLift is open 10:00AM till 11:00PM. (see: Attraction Hours.)

- There is a (day use) fee to enter the park (unless you have an annual park pass).
- Park at the base of the trail, just as you enter the park at the West gate entrance. Enter, turn right, then almost an immediate left into the parking lot.
- Sunset will be around 6:30pm, and it takes around 1 hour to walk to the top. To catch best light, etc, I'd suggest we deaprt the parking at by at least 5:00pm.
- We meet up at the "restrooms" at the base of the trail (just at the train tracks and parking lot).
- The majority of folks walk up the trail and back down. Some take the cable car one way. The last car leaves at dark/sunset.
- Bring a flashlight, for making your way back down the trail. And prepare for possible cold, windy conditions (hat; gloves, etc).

Today's advanced forecast is looking better still
Thu Feb 19 Sunny / Wind 50°/26° 0 %
Please note that low temperature. It's gonna get cold so be sure to dress warmly.
The sky lift will shut down before sunset. If you're on top of the mountain taking pictures of the sunset you will have no other choice but to walk down.

Weather.com is saying that at 12:00 noon on Thursday the skies will go from partly cloudy to clear and remain that way well into the night. Hopefully with today's rain there will not be much haze. We should have an excellent photo op.
Temperatures will be in the mid 30s so dress warmly.
Sunset is at 6:25pm.
I'm going to take time today to make sure all my batteries are charged and pack my camera backpack. A flashlight is VERY IMPORTANT!
I plan on getting to the west parking lot a bit early, say about 4:30 - 4:45, and start hiking up the mountain shortly after 5:00.
tag the photos "aps021909"
See you there.

Joe leads the charge:

The shooters:

The view alone is well worth the walk up the mountain:

Almost there:

And after the sunset:

Thursday night's forecast is for cool/windy. Make sure you have a good coat/wind breaker, hat and gloves.
Sturdy shoes make a difference for the walk up/back (running shoes will work fine).
Also good to bring:
- tripod
- water (no facilities on top of mountain)
- snack
- flashlight (for the walk back down)
- small pack, etc. to put it all in
Note: You do not need a "super wham-o-dyne" telephoto to get nice sunset pictures.
Film shooters welcomed!
Sunset is around 6:30pm, so we need to all be headed to the top, at least by 5:00pm to get set-up, catch the good light, etc.
Meet-up in the parking lot at the trail head (West gate entrance), near the rest rooms.

Weather.com says the temperature at sunset will be about 43 with a 17mph wind. That means it'll feel like 35.
Dress warmly.
The experience of watching the sun set behind Atlanta alone is worth the trip up and down the mountain. Having a camera with you is just a bonus.
One thing is certain. If we all start out for the top at the same time we won't arrive at the same time. If we all arrive at the top at the same time we didn't start out at the same time. The only thing that matters is that you're on top of the mountain at 6:25 with your equipment ready to go.
Hmmmm, checking my manual, Oh, mirror lock up is custom function 12. I'm gonna give that a try tonight.
I think I'll go clean my sensor.

Forecast for 5:00pm today is for Sunny, 42F and WINDY. Wind chills will make it feel 32F! Chance of rain is zero.
Please do not attempt the walk up the mountain without suffecient clothing (warm coat and windbreaker) -- including a hat and gloves!
We will depart for the top promptly at 5:00pm....
See everybody there!

It was very very COLD and WINDY.
And when the sun disappeared behind the horizon everybody was in a big rush to get their equipment packed and ready for the trip back down the mountain. No waiting around for the building lights to come on.
I had a great time. Thanks to all those brave souls who withstood the elements and made the climb. The experience of seeing the sun set behind Atlanta is worth the hardships and the effort even if you don't bring a camera.

I'll be posting more pictures tomorrow afternoon. Remember to tag them "aps021909"
It'll happen again in October.
