石庫門－

說到上海的民居，自然就想到石庫門。

石庫門是最具上海特色的居民住宅。上海的舊弄堂一般是石庫門建築，它起源於太平天國起義時期，當時的戰亂迫使江浙一帶的富商、地主、官紳紛紛舉家擁入租界尋求庇護，外國的房產商乘機大量修建住宅。上個世紀二三十年代，圍合仍是上海住宅的主要特徵，但不再講究雕刻，而是追求簡約，多進改為單進，中西合璧的石庫門住宅應運而生。這種建築大量吸收了江南民居的式樣，以石頭做門框，以烏漆實心厚木做門扇，這種建築因此得名“石庫門”。

Shikumen

Foreigners were allowed to build houses in the concession and lease the houses to Chinese residents. The residential houses of Shanghai began to follow a popular design since 1870: a simple, inexpensive and practical brick-and-wood structure called "Shikumen"(stone-framed gate) for its characteristic door frame. The passageways beteween the row of Shikumen houses became the "lanes" (Longdang).
