About Argonne National Laboratory
Argonne National Labratory was the first National Labratory, founded in 1946. It's also one of the largest, occuping 1500 acres 25 miles S.W. of Chicago, and currently employs 2900 people, including 100 scientists and engineers, of which 600 have doctorate degrees. Since 1990, there have been 600 research projects at Argonne, all for peaceful purposes. It is not, and never been, a weapons laboratory. More people attend educational projects there than at any other DOE National Laboratory. Argonne is operated by the University of Chicago for the U.S. Department of Engineering Office of Science.
