About Changing Brussels

In the 1930's, photographer Berenice Abbott portrayed the then radically changing urban landscape of New York with a special focus on buildings and neighbourhouds that were about to be demolished. Her work was later bundled in the book "Changing New York" (still available on Amazon if you want to take a peek).

As a long term resident I feel that Brussels is going through a similar process at this very moment. In comparison with Antwerp, witnesses from the 60s and 70s in the form of architecture, commercial billboards, pubs and restaurants have survived a very long time. Take a stroll in the centre and you'll still see 70s decorated subway stations (Rogier, Noordstation, etc), handpainted sexcinema billboards on avenue Jacqmain, untouched pubs out of the 60s on Anspachlaan.

The problem is that at this very moment these witnesses from 60s and 70s Brussels are disappearing at a quick pace : the Martini building, the former Olivetti tower, the old Passage 44 neon sign, the Lotto tower,...

To cut a long story short : with this group I would like to create a space for pictures of all what's left of nostalgic 60s, 70s (and hell yes also 50s and 80s) architecture, signs and infrastructure that might disappear in the short future in favour of shiny grey office buildings (like the new Rogier tower, the renovated De Brouckere subwaystation,...).
