About Deep Navigation Colliery, Treharris, South Wales 1873-1991

The sinking of the colliery began in October 1873.
The north shaft was 649yds deep and the South shaft 760yds which at that time was the deepest mine in the coalfield.
By 1881 both shafts were raising coal. For many years the pit was said to produce the best quality Welsh steam coal.
Deep Navigation closed in 1991.
I have taken the photos in black & white as I felt it reflected the mood of the day. I also took a set in colour as I feel it gives a completely different atmosphere to the closure.
