The Greatest Naval Battle in History

The Battle of Leyte Gulf, specifically the role of the USS Princeton, CVL 23, light carrier, on October 24-25, 1944. This group is dedicated to everyone that may have been on the Princeton, is related to someone who served on the ship, or any of the rescue ships that were involved, friends & family.

The USS Princeton was a part of the task force under the command of Admiral Bull Halsey that was ordered to defend the U.S. invasion fleet participating in MacArthur's return to the Phillipines. During the first days of the invasion, the Princeton was attacked by Japanese land based bombers, receiving 1 bomb hit, which eventually sank the ship.

During her time in action, the air groups aboard the Princeton were made up of F6F Hellcat fighter, TBF Avenger torpedoe/bombers, and SBD Dauntless dive bombers. The ship and crew earned 9 battle stars before going down in action in the Battle of Leyte Gulf.
