Ants are one of the most abundant insects on Earth and possess many characteristics that make them unpalatable to predators. This is of significant evolutionary value and has led to many arthropod species mimicking ants to avoid predation. Some species also mimic ants so they can hunt them instead. Mimicry can be morphological, behavioural or chemical in nature, but is usually a combination of these. Collectively this phenomenon is known as myrmecomorphy.
